Back streets and anywhere else not full of tourists.  If your goal is a little anthropology and cultural immersion, tourist areas should be avoided.

Not sure what you mean by a feel for the people but if visiting Bangkok

seeing the Grand Palace is a must see. If you appreciate amazing and

beautiful architecture then you won't be disappointed. Since about 95%

of Thais are Buddhist then it may give you some insight to the history

of the country.

But there are many incredible temples to see. I also enjoyed Wat

Benchamabophitr.

Wat Kartoum Sua Paa on Sukhmvit 77 (On Nut)

It is about a 25 minute drive from the intersection with Sukhmvit, but it is a beautiful Temple complex, right on the canal (with giant canal carp protected by the monks in the hundreds or even thousands) and beautiful Koi-type fish with gorgeous settings).

Also, if you are coming to Thailand and want to see something that has absolutely no tourists whatsoever, this is a good place. You will be the only non-Thai people, I gurantee that!
