Planning to be an expat

Post new topic

layfetteburwell

Hello everyone, I plan on living the expat life starting in the DR. I will be running my business here in America, but I plan on living in Puerto Plata. I also plan to open a small bar/food hub/barbershop on the beach preferably near or on Playa Sosua Beach. I’m here doing some ground work but I’m pretty sure lease prices are better discussed there, but does anyone have an idea or estimate about how much it is to lease a space on the beach?

Welcome to the forum!  So your timing is bad as they have just started changing that beach. As I understand it the bars restaurants and stalls are all being closed down. They are busing a new plaza with locations. I am sure there will be less than before in terms of numbers available but you should investigate!

Look for a plan B location!

Also, be sure you understand Dominican labor laws, taxation, business licensing, etc. Unless you have residency, you can own a business but cannot legally do any work, including management and oversight.

@layfetteburwell Hi! Watch out for regulations that prohibit some businesses operating on or near the beach. Not saying there are any, but very wise to get a local attorney. Check out: ********
