HOUSE Appropriations Vice Chairman Luis Campos said on Thursday that Congress has set aside P200 million this year to begin building a new Zamboanga International Airport.

"On capital outlay for aviation infrastructure, we provided P200 million for the new Zamboanga International Airport.

"We also provided P50 million for the Vigan Airport in Ilocos Sur, and P15 million for the M'lang Airport in Cotabato in the 2023 General Appropriations Law," Campos said.

The new Zamboanga International Airport in Zamboanga City will be built in an area of 175 hectares. It will include a 3,440-meter runway to accommodate larger aircraft, a control tower, a passenger terminal, and six jet bridges. The facility will be 17 kilometers away from where the current airport is located.

The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) had initially proposed P445 million for the airport in Ilocos Norte's capital city.

Campos also said that Congress raised to P785 million the funding for new facilities at the Laoag International Airport.

Overall, he said that Congress increased to P1.3 billion the 2023 funding to develop, restore, and upgrade the aviation facilities under the Department of Transportation. The DBM had initially requested P2.5 billion.

Meanwhile, Campos added Congress kept intact the P1.42 billion budget for the Tacloban International Airport, P500 million for the Antique Airport, P80 million for the Bukidnon Airport, and P43 million for the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Hmm. . . build an International Airport for $36 million USD?

What is the point of spending all that money on a new airport. Laguindingan International Airport, serving Cagayan De Oro and surrounding area opened in June 2013 and to my knowledge there has not been one international flight arrival there. In fact, the only routes seem to be to Cebu, Manila and Davao.

Unless the Philippines can attract major International  Airlines to fly into and out of Zambo, I think the money is wasted and I can hardly see Zambo being a cost effective route for any airline.

"Zamboanga International Airport." It probably wont be an international airport, Laguindingan Airport, which was built to serve both Cagayan De Oro and Illigan city is in fact called Laguindingan International Airport but it only has flights within Philippines, all of the planes that land there have to do a three point turn at the end of the runway and travel back up the runway to the terminal LOL

Yeh I have been to Laguindingan three times. I just don't see the point of building and Airport that only serves domestic routes and calling it an International Airport. I would have thought that to call yourself an International Airport, there must be the capacity to at least operate as one, larger runway to accommodate larger aircraft included.

Harbred6051

Not necessarily. My dad lives in the U.S. near Corpus Christi Texas. The airport in Corpus Christi is called Corpus Christi International Airport, yet that airport only has flights operating to Houston & Dallas, no international cities served either directly nor nonstop. Same is true for the airports in other Texas cities such as El Paso Lubbock & Amarillo.

Nightfish

200 million peso is 3.7 million USD.

The peso will be "spent" but nothing will be built.
