Considering leaving… wife assaulted!

Post new topic

JohnZ1

Hi there...

I can handle and somewhat get used to the trash in the streets, the chaotic traffic with people doing whatever they want and with no rules, to the people being poorly educated, the lack of minimum organization when it comes to appointments, the absurd expensive prices to buy anything, to the lack of technology when it comes to banking, etc, but I CANNOT TOLERATE DISRESPECT!!!

The Dominican people proud themselves of being ‘welcoming’ and ‘warm hearted’ to others, especially foreigners. But the reality couldn’t be further from truth. If you want to know how people really are, just see how they drive. The average Dominican is one of the most selfish people I’ve met around the world.

Me and my wife are living in Santo Domingo, near the Malecon, for almost 1 year now. Most of our life here have been uneventful, and slowly getting used to this chaotic but beautiful place.

My wife walks our dog at the Malecon, yes, the shore, which is FULL of tourists (we live near the Malecon Center, for those who know the place). Despite some occasional horn and people shouting (even when I’m with her), nothing much use to happen…. Until today! Today, around 8am, a person, a man, crossed my wife in the street and without saying anything SPAT ON HER FACE!!! For ABSOLUTELLY NO REASON!!! My wise is white, short brown hair and have some tattoos. Our dog has 45 pounds (20kg) and usually this is enough for her to feel safe enough to walk him when I can go with them.

WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PLACE?? This is clearly xenophobic behavior.

I came very close to resigning from my job and going away… We’re now thinking in maybe moving to Juan Dolio or another place…

Anyways, thank you for ‘hearing’ me out....

Wow,  I am so sorry she experienced this.  I have never heard of this happening before and it is  atrocious!

There are a lot of things needing fixing here.  And there is a lot that is pretty damn wonderful too.

This is disgusting and I am sorry!

planner

I am sorry for your experience as well.  Sadly this country is not for everyone!

JohnZ1

@planner Thank you for your msg. The only places I've ever heard of things like this is on country side china, or some extremist muslin country.  :(

@Joao Zaccardi  I acknowledge your experience, that has not been mine. My first experience was the taxi driver that took us from the airport supplier to Casa he couldn’t have been nicer. We stopped at the market. We stopped at two markets. Actually, he offered to come in and translate and carry stuff how that’s all well and good what’s really important is to understand that the price is already been established, and I had no expectation for any of those things we took such a liking to him. I asked him for some recommendations online and he pointed out the wines he thought we would drink and I said what do you drink any point into some less expensive wines and I asked him why and he said well that’s what I can afford I said, but what do you like and we bought him wine  and then we stopped at another market we kept and now we keep in touch he’s taking us on several rides, he suggested we walk to one place because he thought it was a waste of money for us to go by taxi. I checked on him after the storm, and we now keep in touch  next month. We will reach out to him again when we come back. Then there’s the staff at the condominium complex it’s not an all inclusive, so no one was working for tips again. They were accommodating kind and helpful so in conclusion that was my experience, everyone has to decide for themselves.

Agree with the Planner DR is not for everyone! But it sounds like a mental health issue which is a problem everywhere I see it everyday in the US. Lots of people are in  need of mental help around the world! They are attacking individuals, pushing people on the train tracks. Attacking without reason!

JohnZ1

@polo1club I hope that was the case... thanks for pointing it out. This was today, so I'm still trying to figure it out what happend. Thank you!

planner

Good point!  Could have been a mental health issue!  Very sad but would be an explanation for unusual behavior.

I am very sorry to hear this too.  You really articulated this very well, the lack of rules and organization,, waiting in lines, and poor education.  The majority are very poor and even if they work hard, they cant get ahead . To  me, many Dominican people appear to be nice but it seems only because they see you as a way to make money.  They pretend and then take advantage of you, or if they cant fool you, they resort to other ways.   So my conclusion is, this leads to very bad behavior and danger.   What happened to your wife seems different, like a drug addict or a sick person with mental health issue yes, but I am not surprised.  This is a strange  and beautiful place.  But for me I think we must always be on the defensive here.

You mentioned Juan Dolio.  I spent most of my time in Punta Cana but I decided to take an adventure to Juan Dolio.  I am here now. in a very nice apartment building.  The beach is nice but there are huge holes all over the street you cant just drive without watching.  There are a few restaurants but not even a grocery store here.  The garbage is piled beside some buildings and they burn it every night I cant leave the window open and I am in a beautiful apartment on the 12th floor.   The noises are very loud here too. and although its alot calmer than Santo Domingo, I dont think its very safe either.

Have you tried Cocotal in Bavaro? (Punta Cana) .  Its a big golf course with a community of homes and apartments all around inside of there.  It is a gated secure community.   Very safe to walk the dog, quiet and peaceful.  There are Dominicans living there too.  Everyone has 1, 2 or 3 dogs!  Just an idea if you want to try instead of just rushing away from here.  Alot of people say you dont experience Dominican life  this way (in a gated community) but its one of my favorite places to stay.  You can leave and adventure out any time you want but when you walk the dog, you dont have to be worried.

As I understand it he lives in SD as he works here!

There is/was a thread on site containing a lengthy post written by a DR citizen who estimated 70% of DR citizens are referred to as tigueres.  Tigueres translated means extreme selfishness. Extreme selfishness means they have virtually zero concern for anyone and will do some terrible things to satisfy themselves. Is it no wonder the country is poor? It's poor because the people are poor. They are poor in character which leads to poor in everything.  In short, and to varying degrees, 70% of the Dominican population are garbage.  For example, on a per capita basis, RD has far more natural resource than Japan. Which country is poor and why is it poor? It's poor because 70% of the population are garbage. Yes these are harsh words but sometimes the truth hurts. And I'll stick with a DR citizen's assertion written right here on this page. 70% of the RD population are tigueres. Translation..garbage.

Okay,  we are not going there with this thread.

We can all agree on some things and we do not need to be denigrating and generalizing. We are guests in this country and you can choose to leave or stay.   Thanks.
