Getting ill when working in Saudi

Post new topic

AndyTT

Hello,

If you become ill during your contract in Saudi with something a bit more series such as a heart attack, cancer etc... Do they allow you to finish your contract or will you be sent home?

If you can still work but be treated, will they allow you to renew your contract and IQAMA whilst being treated?

Thanks

@AndyTT I believe, that's up to you and what is written in your contract. But I believe most contract here, and also in labor code, states that your company cannot just fire just because you are sick.  Not unless if you have a contagious disease. Actually that's the reason why companies here are required to get their employees a medical insurance.

But if it worries you that much, it's better to inform you HR of what you dealing with so they can help you address the issue. In the end it all up to you, you can also choose not to continue your contract base on your medical condition.

Thank you. If you wanted to stay and renew the contract or IQAMA, would that be allowed or do you think they would not allow it as it would cost them money for the medical insurance?

You get 30 days paid sick leave. After that, another 60 days 3/4th paid leave and then finally a months unpaid leave.  But after that, depending on your company, they may keep you as unpaid till you recover or not renew the contract.  For long recovery, practically, most companies will terminate the employment as it does not make business sense to incur cost for someone who is not working.
