Hi Goodday everyone !

My name is Dawn, my mom Angela and I are to move to Mauritius this September. I earn my living online.

I understand that all countries have there own electric plug types

Mauritius type C and G, I think

Moving from South Africa to Mauritius, should I change plugs  for chargers  for  laptops,  smartphones  and  household appliances or do i buy adapters ?

If so what type ? Where do i buy these items ?

Thank you !

Hi , There are plenty of plus and adapters in the supermarkets. No problem with 240v appliances and UK 3 pin plugs. There are also what I believe are french style sockets, but easy to get adaptors to UK 3 pin. Very easy, I have not had any issues .

@dawnjeanpierre- I suggest buying a multi adapter set which you can get at a travel shop or try Game,  Makro, Takelot

Hi Dawn,

for the 3-prong plugs you can buy adapters in SA already with round holes to accept the SA (Type M) 3-pin plug and square prongs to fit into the British style (Type G) sockets in Mauritius.

You can buy a few of these adapters and plug an SA extension lead and multiilug into each, enabling you to power several appliances without needing to remove their SA 3-prong plugs.

a few examples of the Type M to Type G adapter I am talking about:

For the Euro style 2-prong plugs (Type C) including cellphone chargers. no need to worry as newer houses in Mauritius have sockets to accept them without any adapters.

We have noticed looking at some newly-built appartements & villas in Mauritius that some of them no longer have any of the 3-pin British (Type G) sockets but only Euro (Type C) sockets or the French/German  Schuko (Type F)

Should you bring your home appliances and consumer electronics devices to Mauritius or buy new once you get here ?

Both SA and Mauritius have the same 230 volt (220-240 V), 50 hertz AC electrical supply so all your appliances shoud just work

(with fewer electrical voltage spikes, surges and dips in the Mauritian supply and a power failure once every few months or a few times a year as compared to a few times a day in SA)

Cost:

due to excise duty (import levies based on energy consumption), appliances seem to be even more expensive in Mauritius than SA, therefore make use of the 1 container of household goods that new Residents are allowed to bring in duty-free, to bring in all the small and large domestic appliances & consumer electronics devices that you are going to need.

Remember to keep invoices because the value of each item must be in the manifest; also remember that items must preferably no longer be in their original packaging and must look to be in “used” (not brand new) condition, otherwise you might be suspected of bringing in new goods for resale.

Lastly, note that dirt in filters of vacuum cleaners, tumble driers and washing machines could be considered a bio-hazard therefore rather bring those in new or have their filters professionally cleaned before shipping.

Compare SA appliance prices with those on the websites of the following Mauritian shops / groups:

Dear Dawn

You do not have to change your plugs. You can buy all the adapters here in Mauritius.
