Economic self sufficiency application process

I am interested in applying for the Self sufficiency residency as an EU citizen. I am trying to understand how this application process works. Does all the paperwork get submitted and then if you are approved you get issued a residents card? Is this something that has to be done every year, or is the residents card valid for a number of years?

As an EU citizen it is a straight forward process, you email for an appointment, you will be sent confirmation and information on what is required from you and the necessary forms to fill in. You will likely be asked to show bank statements to show you have sufficient capital or income and also show financial activity here to prove you have been here for three months. You will need to show proof of address, lease or title deeds etc.

Biometrics will be taken at interview, then sit back and wait for your residence card which is good for five years. Be prepared to sit back for quite a while, unless things have improved it could easily take 6 months, in the meantime you are given a blue receipt which can be used when necessary.

Also after 5 years your residency card will expire and you need to go through the process again.

That's exactly what Identity Malta notified us!

I have a question about the "sit back for quite a while" period.

In the mean time, can we visit other European countries for 2~3 weeks?

Or should we stay stick in Malta until we receive our residence card?

You can travel as much as you like, but you have to be reachable for the Maltese authorities. 2-3 weeks is not a problem. You can even go to the Malta post office and give them a mail forward order that any important letter will be forwarded to you. However, this is something people do when they stay away for several months.
