Finding a property owner?

Post new topic

Does anyone know if there is a simple way of tracking down the ownership of properties / land in Malta? Is there anything equivalent to a Land Registry or such?

Thanks

Hi Mike,

that can be difficult, especially if it is unbuilt property with very old rights being claimed.

Try this link if it is government property or has been registered.

http://www.gpd.gov.mt/index.htm

But often you even find the authorities not knowing who the owner of a certain piece of land is and asking for the owner to come forward if they need the site for construction of a new road or whatever.

Newer properties should have been registered by a Public Notary with the Land registry and be able to be documented and the owner searched for.

As a member of the Ramblers we often experience hunters and farmers claiming that part of the countryside belongs to them and was given to them by a master for example and that we are not allowed to disturb their hunting but when challenged for proof they just run off and lurk around until we pass !

You also have the so called 'boathouse' owners and other squatters who just take over land and/or buildings for their own private use even if not being the registered owner.

Hope this helps a bit.

Cheers
