Both ,my local travel agencies in England, wont sell a one way to BKK due to not  having confirmed onward departure.

Is this true

Yes, you're "officially" not allowed to buy a one way ticket to Thailand as a tourist. If arriving on a 90 days Non-immigrant O Visa or a Long Stay Visa, a one way ticket is allowed.
