@svega hello and welcome !

Till members share some feedback with you, I suggest that you read the Accommodation in Malaysia article to gather as much info possible about rentals, websites and insurance.

You may also have a look at the adverts published in the Housing in Penang and create your own "looking for" advert to receive some offers.

All the best

Hi Sara,

To get started, you could go to any of the online property sites in Malaysia such as Star Property, iProperty, Property Guru etc and browse rental properties in Penang. Each listing is posted by an agent and you can see their contact details and whatsapp them. Agents work together so if one agent doesn't have what you are looking for then they will usually contact other agents to find what you are looking for. So at least you can make contact with agents and pose your questions to them such as for short term rental periods, furnished places and check out rental prices for different kinds of properties in different locations.

My advice is to beware of agents or supposed agents that approach you online. I would just contact those on the above established sites or other sites which are well-known throughout Malaysia.

Also, don't sign any exclusivity agreements with agents promising that you will only rent through them for 6 months or 12 months or whatever they might ask. If they do ask, just refuse and they will usually accept it. If you do sign such an agreement and eventually find a property through another agent, then they might sue you for compensation.

Good luck!

Its going to be very hard to get a short term rental because most landlords expect 1-2 years written lease. That said, you can find homestays in Malaysia that can accommodate short stays but the shorter the stay, the higher the price. Google for Malaysia homestays and see if anything pops up. Also, you can approach low-star hotels and negotiate a monthly rate. (Im saying low-star to try to keep the price low). We advertised our house, or rooms inside, for short stays in Penang and nobody wanted it. I think thats because so few expats come now compared to the old days.
