Healthcare in Dominican Republic

gainkeeper

Is it true that Dominicans get free healthcare? Is it any good? If I became a resident, would I be entitled to free healthcare? What do the rest of you do for healthcare? Would my US social security do me any good in the Dominican Republic?

I can speak to the third question only. Yes, you can continue receiving Social Security outside the US (in most countries, including the Dominican Republic) -- but not Medicare. IOW basic retirement income yes, help with healthcare costs no.

Yes Dominicans get free healthcare, if you can call it that. It is frankly horrible, nothing preventative, only emergency care and it is aweful.

Some retirees and all legally working get a govt mandated basic care and that is at least a bit better.

Do not rely on free healthcare here.  Anyone who qualifies can get decent to great private insurance. I recommend two companies Humano and Universal.  All companies are full of rules and admin hassles.
