Exchanging American driver's license to Belgian

Post new topic

Upon arrival in Belgium you are fine to drive on your foreign driver’s license upto 185 days after registration in Belgium. After that your license becomes invalid for use on Belgian roads and you may submit the request to exchange your foreign license for a domestic one. I read about this on Belgium’s official website: mobilit.belgium.be. Someone of the administration of this institution said that his US license has to be submitted to our local commune for physical verification. During this verification he may not drive a car in Belgium because he does not possess a valid license at that time. No copies or extracts be will accepted either. Does anyone have any experience with this? How long did it take for your commune to swap it out? Did you carry over all endorsements, like motorcycle, trailer,…Asking for my American husband here on family reunification based on Belgian minor childthank you!!

It takes a month in general (sometimes more), for example Leuven townhall website says 4-6 weeks, while Antwerpen townhall website says upto 8 weeks.

And yes, it will carry all endorsements.
