Hello, I am living in Spain as a "residente", so I need a bank account. Some friends recommended me to open an account in Sabadell or in Santander, but I can't without Spanish ID (DNI). Reading online I found this article that recommends Revolut and Nickel as a good choice for an account for expatsAre they good accounts? Do you recommend them or have othe recommendations?Gracias!

Hi Peter, We can't see your link with the bank because is under review. What is the name of the bank that interests you?

ErikWeller

Hi!

i don’t think you need a Spanish ID. You need an NIE number though. If you are living in Spain already you likely have one already, but if you don’t, request one at designated local police stations.

I have no experience with the banks you mentioned.

Good luck,

Erik

ErikWeller is right on. I'm from the US and  opened an account at Santander with my NIE before I had my temporary resident card (so was not officially processed as a resident). They used my passport and when I got my card they added that to the account.

I tried to open it at BBVA but they wouldn't accept that. I have been very pleased with Santander and the service I have received from them.

Hello,

Just opened a an account at Sabadel with just a NIE and photo ID. And just opened a free online account at BBVA with just NIE (and to finish the registration, you have to go to a BBVA branch to show your photo ID).

Both reasonably easy to open.

It's imposible. You can. If you are "residente", you have a NIE with a number. Also, you can have an account of "no residente" with your passport. But if you are of England, I don't know

@peterashwell1992

if you are an official resident in Spain then you should already have your NIE.  You cant become a resident without it.

You will need it to open a bank account.

We had our NIEs as we were buying an apartment, but were not yet residents. We opened a "non-resident" account with Banco Sabadell. It's fine, a typical Spanish bank, we've had no issues. The non-resident account has a slightly higher monthly fee, but once you have residence documents you can change to a standard account.

I use the new ebanks/emoney guys too. I have accounts with both Revolut and WIse (both emoney currently, i.e don't having a banking license). Both are good, although I use WIse more. I've also heard that N26 is worth considering too (I think this is an ebank).

@laktoz are you legally a resident or it 's just coz you 'are there permanently and you call yourself a resident?. Anyone as a foreigner who expects to open a bank account got previously a NIF ( number identification foreigner) without that specific number you can 't open a bank account . you request than NIF from a spanish ambassy in your own country or at a police station in spain who delivers it and the delay can be very various .

NIF means fiscal identification number and is held by Spanish nationals and companies.

NIE means foreigner's identification number and is required to buy or sell property, amongst other taxable transactions. A resident's permit, required to open a resident bank account, can be applied for to the Spanish Police and the document issued - if you fulfill all legal requirements - will show your NIE
