Living in Malta, working for a German company

Dave1991

Hello everyone,

If I live completely in Malta, but continue to work exclusively and permanently for a German company (employee), what about tax and social security contributions?

A "secondment" is only valid for 2 years. How can this be made permanent?

Unfortunately, I can't find any further information on this.

From experience with people from the UK in this situation the UK authorities insisted all taxes paid there. Yours might ask for something different.

Alternatively the german employer can register locally as an employer (they dont need a company here for this), and then they pay PAYE and social locally in Malta.

You should consider on such short stays that not paying in germany for a short while might impact your eventual pension.

Thank you for the quick reply!

Wouldn't be a problem at all. I'm not interested in saving tax, I just want to do everything right. But surely I have to contact an authority in Malta?

I think this is too complex. However, I have not been able to find any procedures / costs.

It will be at least 5 years.

My main concern is that I have everything in order:

-> Malta doesn't want me to make an additional payment at some point

-> I register with the right authorities

-> I can apply for the Malta residence card

-> I have health insurance

Does anyone know which Maltese authorities / e-mail addresses I can contact regarding taxes and social security?

Maltese wages are lower than German wages. National insurance in Malta pays less than National Insurance in Germany. However, if you think you can afford this go ahead.  For registration  you have to contact e residency Malta in order to get a resident card. After that register with Department of social security Malta. For tax matters contact the revenue department of the region where you reside. taxpayerservice.cfr@gov.mt

The email address of the residence permit office is eu.ima@gov.mt

You can contact https://cfr.gov.mt but tbh, good luck with that, might be better to ask a tax consultant.

Procedures such as how a foreign company registers as a PAYE tax payer here isnt even documented anywhere its a nightmare.

Hello Dave!

I will be in the same situation,

I work remotely for a German company and will be moving to Malta.

How was the process for you?

What did your company needed to do, and what was done from your side?

Can you please share the information?

Thank you
