Tax implications on remote working in Portugal

ceceliamowczan

Hi everyone.

My boyfriend and I are planning to live in portugal next year for 6 months. we are UK citizens. we both work for employers in the UK but work remotely.

Please can we have advice on any tax implications on living in Portugal? Will we only pay UK PAYE tax?

thank you

Hi Cecilia,

If you live in Portugal for 6 months + 1 day in 2024, you will become a tax resident in 2024, filing your tax return in 2025 (between 1 April and 30 June). Tax rates will be the same as for Portuguese citizens:

There is an agreement to avoid double taxation in both countries, meaning that taxes on income paid in the UK (such as taxes on work income, etc) will not be paid in PT, but will have to be declared.

@ceceliamowczan Remember also you are subject to the 90 days in 180 days limitation, as per Schengen rules. So, regardless what you do online daily as your work, you will need a visa to stay longer than 90 days contiguously. If you are going back and forth every 90 days, it is probably a grey area.
