Hi all,
Newbie on the Malta forum? Don't know how to start?
This thread is for you
We invite you to introduce yourself on this topic, to share with us your expat story if you are already living in the country,
or to tell us more on your expat projects in Malta if you are planning to move there.
It will enable us to help you better but above all to wish you a warm welcome.
Welcome on board!
I'm new in this site ,i want just to have friends who live in Malta and also over the world.....
My name is Gabriel Michael Ngwira from Malawi and am new here
Hi,
I'm looking for as much advise as I can find.
My wofe and I are planning the move to Malta (Gozo) in about 4 years time .. I know that sounds a long time away but having already left the UK once for Spain, those 4 years won't take long to be gone.
We are not unique in anyway, not rich or powerful, just normal people .. except ... I have dual nationality, I carry a German and a UK passport thanks to my German Father, I know this makes our plans so much easier.
My wife will be retired by the time we make the move, but I will still have about 5 years of working life left, so hopefully I can find employment.
We also have a medical reason to move, my wife suffers from osteoporosis and we know the warmer climate helps her hugely, we only moved back from Spain to help out our daughter and grand children.
Take care everyone
@cjmarschall
hello and welcome !
I just came across your new topic on the forum and I hope members will provide some guidance soon.
Till then, feel free to have a look at the Living in Malta guide for expats to gather some infos.
All the best
Bhavna

Winters here are cold and damp, humid and mouldy. The temperature might say 10C but combined with badly insulated houses (no insulation) and humidity you should talk with other sufferers here and get their input.
@volcane It was similar in Spain where we were, Winters weren't as good as expected .. but .. they are so much shorter
@Julien Hi I am trying to introduce myself but haven't managed to be able to. No place to write...
Hi I am Anthony Zammit who lived in Canada and Australia, also in Peru and Italy. I speak the two languages in Malta plus Italian and Spanish
I am retired and in May I'll be 68.

Welcome to the forum,
Malta is not pleasant in winter at all. If you really want a warmer climate I recommend Costa Rica.
Furthermore the German passport does not help you much unless you have a German health insurance.
In case you do not have a German insurance it is better to apply as UK citizen. In this case a 10 years residency will
be approved. As a German citizen you can apply for a residence card which will be grated for 5 years
and after that you have to apply again and again.
When I applied in October last year I got an appointment for January this year and after 6 weeks I got a new
residence card which is valid for another 5 years. Each time they ask me to prove if I have a private health insurance
and each time I have to prove to them I do not need a private health insurance because I have a German
heath insurance that covers all the medical expenses.
I would only recommend Malta if you are able to cope with people who ask the same questions
again and again. If you have a basic knowledge of Spanish I recommend Costa Rica.
However, before you make a final decision visit the places whre you want to reside.
Come to Malta in the beginning of February and book a cheap Air&Bnb place
or a cheap hotel. If you can bear the temperature Malta is welcoming you.
I remember I stayed in a cheap hotel in Sliema and the room temperature was just 15 C.
Good luck with your venture. Malta is a nice country, but do not expect too much.
I live in Gozo for more than 10 years and I know what I am talking about.
I also know the Caribbean, but I decided against them because the crime rate in Trinidad is far too high.
The crime rate in Malta is low and that is surely a reason for many Brits and others to take residence
over here.

Well said
insulation is a word that Maltese people don't know about. They know blankets and know how to cope with Sahara dust.
Anybody who can cope with blankets and Sahara dust has no problems in Malta,
@Gabriel Michael Ngwira Hello Gabriel, I am Lyric. I am planning to move to Malta soon on digital nomad visa. I am looking forward to it......

There is nothing wrong with Malta in winter, we do not get bad weather compared to the UK and many other European countries, the temperature is mild compared to them.
It can feel cooler indoors then out, when it does we use air con for heating which this winter we have not used for a while.
@GozoMoThe Maltese builders of old learned how to build houses to meet the particular weather of the islands all year round, ergo, high cealings, tick walls, courtyard, insulated roofs, ventilation and so on. We ignored this way of buildings and to gain space and many more rooms to rent, we had to artificially compromise with ACs, dehumidifiers, and under tiles heating system. Winters in Malta are lovely in old tradional well built houses.
@latomilla
Actually we live in a modern penthouse not an old building.
I own in a house of character, rest assured winter is winter even in a HoC. You need heating, AC or fire.
@volcane Could be MODIFIED House of Character. Yet it is true that winters are getting colder as summers are getting warmer.

This winter has been one of the mildest since we moved here eleven years ago.

-@latomilla
Winters across Europe are becoming milder. Austria and Switzerland have had huge problems with the lack of snow falling and have closed the ski slopes early.
Yes strong agree this winter is very mild - was 5 degrees higher on average than typical we moved in 2015 which was also mild but this year was much milder
still, 40 bags of pellets burned in the HoC and lots of A/C in our stone built apartment

Welcome to the forum. There are many ways coming to Malta. The best way for you is to marry an EU national and come across as spouse of EU citizen. Jobs for trained electricians are available. France is still in the EU. Bon voyage

Welcome to Malta. Just go to the embassy of Italy in Lagos and apply for a Schengen visa. After you have it you can see Malta and the countries of the EU without any additional border check.
Malta is one of the smallest EU countries and has less than 500 000 inhabitants. The question is do you want to visit Malta as a tourist or as a job seeker?
If you want a job in Malta click on Jobs and you will see what suits you best.
If you want information for tourists ask the Malta tourist board. Malta is quite popular as a tourist destination due to her history and due to good flight connections to places all over Europe. However, African travelers have to get a connection flight from London or Amsterdam.

Please keep to this post > Register as a pharmacist in Malta to save confusion.
Hello to all! My husband and I will retire to Gozo in late 2024 with our residency being approved in early 2025.
We love the outdoors, walking and photography. We are moving from the US from a similar desert climate. The lack of humidity was bad for my husband, so we think that a similar climate but with humidity should be just right for us.
We recently visited Malta and viewed several rental properties in Gozo. We are looking for a quiet and slow pace for our retirement.
We had thought we would retire in Costa Rica, until recently. We found out that the CR government had invited the Mexican drug cartels to provide security to CR in exchange for free use of their ports! CR is also now aligned with United Arab Emirates. Too dangerous now, so our research led us to Malta.
We are working with John Huber and Associates for our residency applications. Any suggestions from the group as to what to ask and what not to forget would be much appreciated.
We will review the information provided on your website, and we are thankful for this forum.
Thank you!
