New passport needs new TRC?

Dartanz

I am currently on 5 years visa exemption for spouse.

My passport is full but not expired.

I am planning to apply for TRC. Should I apply after getting new passport or apply for TRC now and inform the new passport and have it updated in the TRC?

Does new passport means get new TRC?

If possible, get the new passport before applying for the TRC, however, make sure you either keep the old, invalid passport OR you make notarized copies of all the pages in the old passport, as immigration wants to see it for proof of the last previous date you entered Vietnam.

A new passport does require an official process to upgrade your Temporary Resident Card (@Aidan ?) so for continuity without extra hassle, get the new passport first.

Also because your passport is "full", if for some reason your wife doesn't get around to finishing the application to sponsor your TRC, you won't have a problem doing another border run on your 5 Year Visa Exemption Certificate.

ALSO, upgrading/changing from a VEC to a TRC wasn't listed on the changes to the law that went into effect in July, 2020, so it's possible you'll first need to swith to a 6 month TT visa before formally applying for the TRC.

So double check that with the approving authority (could be your wife's hometown provincial committee but until recently you had to do the TRC in HCMC or Hanoi, and HCMC is being especially strict on this point, while Hanoi allowed me to switch from a tourist visa directly to a TRC, without needing a TT visa.

Good luck!

Thank you very much for your advise.

The British Consulate in HCMC will only notorized the database page.  So from where to get every page notorized?

It seems that it will be possible for me to get TRC with my wife being the guarantor.

So I am thinking of getting TRC first on current passport And next get a new passport and have the TRC information updated.

Getting UK passport is slower because of big backlogged applications.

What is TT visa?

Best.

I had documents notarized/certified as true copies of the originals at the town office when I lived in Thai Nguyen. Alternatively, I'm thinking any lawyer could notarize documents.

I'm in agreement with you on this, but might be a good idea to confirm this with immigration officials.

Backlog at the embassy in Hanoi (or the consulate office in Saigon)? Are there that many Brits applying for passport renewals in VN? I ask this because Canadian passports are being issued through either the CDN embassy or the consulate, tout suite.

What is TT visa? Best.      -@Dartanz

"TT

Issued to foreigners that are spouses, children under 18 years of age of the foreigners issued with LV1, LV2, ĐT, NN1, NN2, DH, PV1, LĐ visas or foreigners who are parents, wives, husbands and children of Vietnamese citizens"

See here (Link), and in member's posts down a little further in that thread, for details on the TT visa.

The backlog is back at the UK passports office & they are still blaming Covid 19 & the civil servants working from home as the reason. Taking the dog for walks, doing the garden, having long lay ins because the job is so stressful have been identified as the cause for the lack of productivity. I have heard though is a lot better now.

UK passport renewals are not handled by the Embassy or the Consulate, its done at processing centres in Ha Noi & HCMC. From there if you manage to get all the documents correct that application goes to UK by courier (that you pay for)                The UK Embassy & Consulate are far too busy organising their garden parties for trivial stuff like Passport renewals!!

Dartanz

@goodolboy yes, you are correct. All UK passports are to be sent to HMPO in Liverpool. They are no longer renewed outside UK.

Hence, the backlog.

Dartanz

@Aidan in HCMC thank you very much for your detailed advise. Highly appreciated.

Best.
