Hi all
We will be moving permanently from Canada around June/24. One of us is 66, the other 51.
My question is anbout finding a company that will provide health insurance for someone 65+.
Have any expats pursued obtaining private health insurance through Cigna or Allianz?
Cigna tells me that they can arrange private, local insurance (not the globetrotting versions aka “international”).
So far, Universal says no to 65+. I have yet to contact Humana.
Any advice, tips, pointers to this newbie would be very welcome!! Thanks
Humano does not offer it here! There is only one company and plan and the coverage is bad and it's expensive. That's my opinion of course. 😊
Contact me privately and i will provide contact info. for my Dominican Insurer. I am Canadian as well

I tried to communicate with him privately and was told that he was banned and the message would not go thru.
As someone who is 65, i too have an interest in this subject.
Hi all
Here is a little update on what I found out re. private health care.
I could not find one local insurance company that would start health insurance for anyone 65+.
But I did get a quote from Cigna. For 2 people (one aged 66, the other 51), with a:
$1,500 deductible each, 0% cost share, for inpatient, and
$0 deductible and 0% cost share outpatient, the premium is $930/month (that’s the total for both).
For just the 66 year old, and with higher deductibles chosen, the lowest premium I was quoted was $599. Of course, lower deductibles would raise the premium.
This quote was for what they call ”Close Care”. It is not those going to multiple countries It also covers you for some months in your home country.
Usual caveats: do your own research, I may have not captured all the info, typos possible, and not promoting them.
Finally, once you are a customer, you will not be dropped at a particular age. i read that some companies do that.
Allianz is another company I have yet to try. But I suspect that the premiums will be similar.
Note: move here before you are 65!😜
If someone finds a better quote, let me know.
Robert
@plannerhi Planner
Yes you are right, it is an international company. But it can provide international or local coverage.
For those aged 65+ and starting a policy, going to an international company appears to be the only option, unless you or another reader is aware of a local insurance company that provides coverage for new policies for those 65+.
That would be great since I imagine it would be cheaper.
If a Dominican company hires you and a work visa is arranged, you are on your way to low cost health care coverage. Perhaps you have consultant abilities. There are a host of possibilities Robert.

Hi Steve
I will just pay the premium closer to the move date. It turns out that you can only lock in a quote for 45 days (with Cigna anyway).
Re. work, I am done with that! But that could be something others may want to consider if the premiums are an issue.
@Steverino7777 what about Mapre? Also can people start a group to get lower rates?
I am not sure what Mapre is but you have to be under 65 to get the low cost health insurance Tass.....
SENASA accepts people over 65, on the condition that they are still healthy. There are blood labs, urinalysis and fecal analysis to be done.
Any health issue detected and you will be denied .
Hmmmm well i was going to retire to the DR full time in 2025 but the astronomical health care insurance premiums are giving me second thoughts. im in good health now but that's not to say down the road that things can’t change. i guess being canadian i was naive to the cost of health care in other countries. i will be 65 in December. A blessing and a curse at the same time lol

I am from Alberta. I am building in Moca (near Santiago) where my wife is from. Ijust Turner 73. Last summer I had an operation to remove a cancerous tumor in ky large intestine. I can't get insurance in the DR now. I travel back & forth everything 6 months tp keep my AB healrh care active & my wife is being process3d for Cdn Permanent Resident & she will have to do the same. Iwill be getting travel insurance so as to be fliwn back in case needed. I am otherwise healthy and am recovering. I don't let anyrhing stop me as I live off CPP, OAS, CF Pensión & VAC Medical pensiones....just saying, for me itvis worth it & you're younger...
Some local insurance companies will insure you if you apply before reaching 65 .
At 65+, from what I have found so far, only international companies like CIGNA (the one I plan to use) will cover you. If you want only the DR and your home country, the rate is cheaper than international health insurance (which seems to be for those who are in multiple countries in a year).
CIGNA calls their local insurance option ”Close Care”. If you contact them, make sure to mention that. And of course, the premium is lower for higher annual deductibles and higher co-payments.
I also plan to look at Allianz but my experience with them has not been good.
If I could also add a personal comment as a Canadian.
I will be glad to escape the Canadian health care system. Sure it’s “universal”, but wait lists are at record highs. And there is no prospects for it getting better.
I guess I would rather pay a premium to have health care and the beach, rather than universal access to a wait list, and snow.
Im glad your recovering and doing well. i guess i could go back every six months to keep up my ohip but i was hoping to leave the blackflies, mosquitos and the cold white stuff behind for good. lol. i would much rather my kids come to Dr to visit than me come baxk up here to freeze or fight black flies haha. But i dont have a wife so i will be able to come and go as i please. Thanks for the info though. Happy healthy life to you and yours.
@robertinvan thanks for the info. i will look into that. yes your right. on the beach is so much better👍
I can confirm insurance is readily available here before age 65! I have several clients who purchased close to 65 and pay until they move down here. After 65 you are covered as long as you continue to pay!
@planner thank you for the info. thats good to know ahead of time. thanks so much.
@planner
do i need to be hired by a comapny in the DR?
can i somewhere online get a quote?
We plan to move to north coast late 2025. Am I correct in understanding, as long as we are both under 65 years of age when we move we can both get insurance? And it will remain in effect as long as we pay the premiums? We feel we have to move before 2026 or my husband will be 65.
Can a non-resident get health insurance
I will be moving to DR at the age of 68 full time
Another scenario can my spouse under the age of 65 who is a DR citizen get health insurance and put me on her plan
At age 68 you have one option and it not great.
Your spouse can get insurance but cannot include you after age 65.
Thanks
What's my one option for age 68
