Need some information about PPP dogs in Spain

Hello there. I am hoping to move to Alicante or nearby by the end of Feb or early March. I'm a psychotherapist, but initally will be studying Spanish. I am coming with my dog. She is a Staffy / Bully cross. She technically fits what was the perros potentialmente peligrosos (PPP) or dangerous dogs list but I am getting a lot of conflicting information. I am told either that the list still exists, I will have to get a licence and that she will have to wear a muzzle in public, that the list no longer exists and as long as I have a licence she won't have to wear a muzzle and that, even though you have to have a licence and even though PPP dogs officially have to be muzzled, no one in Spain actually muzzles their dogs anyway. Can anyone shed any light on this please?

@DWF002

To be on the safe side,  muzzle your dog in public areas.  All you need (as a foreigner) is to have your dog injure someone and get arrested for not having a muzzle, damages for injury, hospital stays,  etc….i wouldn't take that kind of risk… cheers

I found these articles from late last year:

https://www.aon.es/personales/seguro-pe … nueva-ley/

https://www.abc.es/sociedad/lista-compl … 27-nt.html

Hope that helps!

And this article from 7 days ago (but I couldn't read it without paying for a subscription to the online paper)

@Lmflmf1 Thank you for the advice. I hear what you are saying. My dog is very well socialised but accidents happen, but they can be caused by another dog and still get you in to trouble. I don't like the idea of muzzling, especially in the heat. But, it is what it is I guess.

@NomadWriter Very helpful thank you. I guess there's lots of skulking around out of the way places to get dogs exercised properly. LOL

@NomadWriter I managed to open that one up for free the other day. Don't know how I escaped the subscription but, yay

@DWF002 Good morning

I indicate. In September 2023 an animal welfare law partially came into force, which is the reason why you are receiving this contradictory information.

Currently it is still mandatory for PPPs to obtain a license, pass the psycho-technical tests and take out liability insurance for PPP dogs.
