Renewing My Non-Lucrative Residency Visa

Post new topic

A simple question I hope: My non-lucrative residency visa expires in late February 2024, a year after my arrival in Barcelona. Where and how do I renew it?

Hola a todos!

My wife just posted this on a website and I thought I would share our experience here.

We just electronically submitted documents for renewal our Non Lucrative Visa- NLV -(years 2 & 3), We hope our experience will be useful.

One can renew the visa 60 days prior and up to 30 days after the 1 year expiration date of the initial Non Lucrative Visa (NLV) and it can be accomplished online without having to make an appointment at the local immigration office. One can pay for this service (I've seen around €300 or more) or do it yourself (€16,40).

The first step is to obtain a digital signature certificate.  One can hire a service to do this (expensive) or do it yourself (free).

We got our digital certificates in advance, in February. It was easy and fast.
There is an old but good and still valid Youtube video on how to obtain the digital certificate, step by step:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFpkm8j2Bdo

We used Mozilla Firefox using Mac Monterey OS running on a MacBook Pro.

We started the process exactly 60 days before our visa expiration date (August 1st)

First we paid online fee Modelo 790 tasa 052, tick box 2.2. (€16,40)

It was easy and smooth, with just one hiccup - initially Firefox didn't want to

open the digital certificate on the Mac, finally we clicked on "Allow Always" button (not just "allow once") and everything worked (keep in mind that for Windows it might be different).

We collected required documents a little bit in advance and made sure that each file was 6 Mb or less in PDF format.

All pages of passports

Financial documents (U.S. Bank and Spain Bank Accounts, Wise Transfer Accounts, U.S. 1040 tax return in Spanish)... all documents were obtained in Spanish from the websites and merged into 1 pdf file.

Medical insurance (Initial NLV Letter from Broker stating our insurance policy is renewable.)

Marriage certificate (The same one we used for the initial NLV it is officially translated and has original apostille attached only 1 person submitted the marriage certificate... we are connected as a couple via NIE numbers on Spanish bank account statement and Empadronamiento)

Empadronamiento

payment receipt (tasa 052) )

For renewing visas we used that link:

https://sede.administracionespublicas.g … curio.html

Everything was pretty straightforward and easy, form EX-01 was already embedded in the process, our names were already there. We went through the process, uploaded documents and signed with AutoFirma, here is the link to it:

https://firmaelectronica.gob.es/Home/Descargas.html

Make sure to use latest version of AutoFirma and that you choose the correct version of operating system (we used 1.8.2 Mac OS ... x64 ).  Also make sure you are using one of the recommended web browsers because it won't work otherwise.  Firefox is what we used.

After signing we downloaded and printed (just in case) receipts and forms EX-01.  Within a day of submitting we received a confirmation message via email.

In addition to that there is a very good blog post :

Since there was no any pitfalls for us (so far), it seems that doing things online is improving in Spain.

I will post an update when we will get approved.

@chasleslieb

One update.... we did not realize the date of expiration was related to the date of entry into Spain as printed on the TIE  NOT the date of approval of the visa by the consulate.

Therefore, the application was rejected because we submitted two months too early...

The procedure will be the same though... This was a good practice run.

I have a question:  We submitted the documents electronically and the EX01 application was rejected as noted because it was filed too early.  Does anyone know if I have to pay the visa application fee again with 790-052 form or is the payment I made for this (rejected) application still valid and I just submit the same receipt when I re apply.

I cannot seem to find an answer anywhere.
