Family reunification with an EU citizen

Hi all :)

My partner and I are in the process of relocation to Denmark and have had some concerns lately about whether we fulfill the requirements for family reunification.

My partner is an EU citizen and moved to Denmark in July 2023 for his studies. I am a third-country citizen and going to join him there in February 2024. We are planning to apply for family reunification under the EU rules.

We are not married but had been living together for more than a year and a half before he moved and visited each other multiple times during this gap. We couldn't move together because he had to start his master's in Denmark and I had to finish mine in our home country.

I am afraid now that this gap can be a problem when applying for family reunification, both because they require cohabitation up until the moment of moving and because it's longer than 3 months between my partner moving and me following him.

Have any of you gone through something similar and can share your experience?

Would it be helpful if we explained the situation in a letter and attached it to the application?

Or maybe getting married before we apply can help?

Thank you, I hope you can bring some light to it!
