digital nomad visa, us citizen working for german company

johnanderson

Hi!

I am a US citizen. Have been living in Germany and working for a German company for the last 15 years.

I am in the process of applying for a digital nomad visa so I can live in Spain and do my job.

I am finding the rules for tax and social security contributions pretty confusing.

I am still not sure exactly where I will be paying what.

Is there anyone else with a similar story?

Thanks!

If you're a German employee, you can leave this arrangement in place while working remotely. This means your income tax and social security contributions are deducted by your employer and paid in Germany. I doubt anyone will object.

If you love your new life in Spain, and you want to change your employment status, you could become an autonomo (self employed) and have the German folks pay you gross. Then you deduct the appropriate amounts and pay them to Spain. It sounds like a pain in the proverbial to me. :-)
