Hello.

Are there any rules or regulations regarding the amount of time a person with dual citizenship, (Canadian and Maltese) can live in Malta? I pay taxes in Canada but live in Malta. I guess I should have looked into this a while ago. I have been here for 5.5 months so far.

Thanks,

If you have Maltese citizenship, why would you be stricted on how long you stay in the country?

Hello.

As you hold Maltese citizenship, from a residency point of view you may stay in Malta as long as you wish. If you do not already have a Maltese ID card, as you have been in Malta for 5.5 months, it would be best if you go to apply for one. Visit the Identity Cards Unit at Gattard House, National Road, Blata l-Bajda.

From a tax point of view, when an individual is present in Malta for more than 183 days (in any particular year) they will be considered as tax residence in Malta for that year, regardless of the purpose and the nature of the individual’s stay in Malta. So once this time has elapsed, you will be liable to pay tax in Malta.

Please check here for more details:

or the Freephone 153, they are very helpful.
