Will retirement in México be affordable in the next 10 years?

Post new topic

Hola todos!

I retired to Mexico in 2012. I secured my residente permanente at a much, much lower financial hurdle than needed today. For the most part I enjoyed living in Mexico a lot... the friendly Mexicans.. the music, dancing and the architecture. But the crime... never worried about cartel stuff... was on the rise.. murders in San Miguel de Allende reached 103 in the year 2018 (?) and the cost of everything was in rising rapidly.

In 2015 I left Mexico.. Sort of... to build a life in Thailand. It's going very, very well for me here. Inflation in the past 10 years has averaged 2.5% in Thailand versus 5% in México... similar differences in the cost of living index too.

Healthcare in Thailand is easy and inexpensive too... although, knock on wood... my health is great.

I miss México and would return tomorrow if the crime was improving...which from what I know it's only worse. Here in the suburbs of Hua Hin I rent a beautiful villa with a swimming pool for just 540 usd a month.. But more importantly.. I never lock the doors. No home here uses barbed wire and electrified fencing.

I would return to México tomorrow if prices stabilized....or at least slowed down a lot.

A question for retirees who also moved to Mexico around ten or more years ago and are in their Seventies like me:  What keeps you in México? Can you afford to live there in another ten years?

@1happykamper Thank you for sharing your perspective. My husband and I are favoring Mexico over Asia because if its proximity to "home", family and friends.

Thanks for sharing your story. I agree Mexico is not what it was. I came to live here in 2006 and feel each year less happy. I'm curious to know what you like about Thailand aside from the cost of living? And what do you miss about Mexico?

I'm choosing to live in Thailand now due to the following reasons

1. The home I rent is 14km from the city of Hua Hin. In México this would be described as El campo. No way would I risk living in the countryside of Mexico. Thailand life.. City or countryside is very safe

2. It's easier to get things done here... Getting a fiber optic connection of 1gb up and down.. only a 3 day a wait and low cost. Drivers license and public Healthcare access.. Easy to get. Far less red tape.

3. The food here is tasty... besides very inexpensive... Its healthier than the average Mexican meal.

4. When I order things online nothing gets stolen. It simply arrives... oftentimes the next day.

Things I miss that are in Mexico:

1. Mexicans and their curiosity and friendliness

2. Mariachi music

3. Town Plaza

4. Happy people dancing

.. and with current economic trends in Mexico... will you be able to afford it? I realize that nothing is certain... But... If you read my post... Its getting expensive... Almost as expensive as USA.

Greetings.

I,  too, am disillusioned.   I obtained my permanent residency in Mexico two years ago so I can come and go as I please.    just turned 70.  But I have decided to stay only for 6 months each year.   I was advised to buy a place but, after much deliberation, decided against it.    I am single and do not want the hassles..   I have friends that have loved Thailand and Im glad you will be happy there.   The old saying about the seven deadly sins is true .. .greed is up there.  sadly.

I dont know where you lived in Mexico that is even close to the cost of USA.  A 1 bedroom apt in western CO not in the mountains cost more then the 3 bed 2.5 bath house with 360 views of lake and mountains in lake chapala.  It cost almost 20usd to buy a lunch at a fast food restaurant in the USA.  For less then 15usd I buy a filet with sides never frozen all local.  You are not up to date on USA costs if you think Mexico is even getting close.  And I live in lake chapala like I said which is one of the more expensive places in Mexico.  I see way to many of the been here for 20 years saying Mexico is getting as expensive as the USA.... when they have no idea what the USA costs.

We have temp status and been here 2.5 years  We are very concerned about the rising costs as came here to save money and not happening.  We live in a very safe area of san miguel de allende so have not had any problems with crime but I realize crime is getting worst in other hoods  Apparently, Guanajuato state crime is so bad now that the state is now added to list of most violent crime states in Mexico but we have been fortunate on this front and SMA is relatively safe (especially compared to big cities in USA)  We are 50’s & 60’s and when we can afford to buy here, we will be priced out of the market due to rising costs  Grocery bills are the worse problem for us as far as costs but its still cheaper than the US. Strangely, houses for sale are cheaper in the countryside of Italy, France Spain and Portugal than it is in expat towns like SMA. Having said all that I absolutely adore it here and the best part is the Mexican people!!! I have two friends seriously considering Thailand - we would too if could take the heat.

It is better to rent and put the money you would have bought the house with into a cedes which pays 11.55% and .5% mexican taxes. Rent to hone prices in ex pat areas are way out if wack for every 1k usd rent should be 100k USD to buy the house. Its the oldest equation on the planet. Ex pat homes to buy are Rio offs. I rent a 300k usd house for 1100 usd. 360 views of the lake and mountains

I totally agree. I've never understood retirees that continue to buy property aged 65 plus. I would want more freedom. Especially in any developing nation where zoning laws and things like barking dogs can become an overnight nightmare!

Renting provides me flexibility and far less cash outlay even over the next 20 years. The ROI just isn't there in many expat areas

@MexicoAfterlife Yes I agree that it’s worth considering other investment options  Who is offering CD’s for 11.55%?
