Mandatory volunteering activity prior to PR formalities?

Dear all,

I have heard from a friend of friend that from March 2024, people having PR IPA (In Principal Approval) will need to do some volunteering activities (taking care of old age/ tree planting etc) before getting their NRIC card issued.

That sounds weird to me. Has anyone got your PR IPA recently? Is there any of such requirement related to volunteering service? Can you help to share your experience?

Arje21

We got our PR in Jan 2024 and did not get anything like the above in IPA. My colleague recently got in Feb 2024 and she also did not see anything stated in the IPA.

I have not heard about such requirements.

Volunteering and giving to the society is seen as one of the requirements for getting a PR application approved. But after approval, I do not believe there is a need to force people to do even more.

@arje21, congratulations on your PR approval. May I ask how long it took for your decision to come through? And also for your colleague? Just wondering if we are seeing faster PR approvals these days? Thank you!

Arje21

for me it's 16 months and for my colleague, it was a little over 11 months.

Thanks @arje21, thats a long wait 😞 but good you got a successful outcome after that long wait 😊

Hi Patrick,

Indeed, this is accurate. The initiative has been recently introduced on a pilot basis, making it quite novel, and its awareness may still be limited among the public. Successful PR applicants are chosen at random to participate in this program which explains why some recently approved individuals might not find this included in their IPA.

Thank  you so much. May I know how long will the pilot last, and what's the next step from ICA?

I'm not entirely certain about the duration of the pilot programme, but it seems probable that it will become a permanent fixture, possibly even a mandatory one, given that a similar programme already exists for Singapore Citizenship, albeit with differing components.

Regarding what comes next, this initiative represents just one aspect of the standard PR formalities that individuals typically need to complete before proceeding to the ICA building.
