USA State Residency

How would the state know where you are actually living at any point in time? Maybe examination of your passport? But I suspect they would need a valid reason to spend time and effort to investigate.I have never heard of this. Every state has its own rules I guess.        -@RockyM

My thoughts exactly.  After I moved to the DR, California still wanted to tax me years later.  They had NO idea I had left the state until I explained it to them.

That's how I expect it to go- they will reach out regarding taxes and I will tell them I am no longer a resident of the state. They will also know when I register to vote as a expat.

Too bad that state has such taxes,  Oh well.  Then you will need a license from somewhere.

I got legal residency in the DR before I sold my home in California and moved here. I needed somewhere to get a valid driver's license and this is the place.

On the voting thing for me, because of the electoral college, my vote against a Democrat for POTUS  will never matter since we are talking about California.  Vermont?  That might have an impact I suppose.

My vote probably wouldn't make much difference but I'll still cast it.We'll get licenses in the DR and our son will have the car registered in his name (along with the ability to use it when we're gone).

Lets keep the non DR comments out of this thread please. There is an Anything Goes thread for that discussion.  Thanks
