Cosmopolitan cities

Which are the most cosmopolitan cities in your opinion?

From what I've seen in my short life, n°1 is New York

In Europe I think London is the most cosmopolitan place (Barcelona is interesting too)...

Which other cities would you add to the list?

Sinbad

Mecca, at certain times of the year. :-)

Mecca is forbidden to the non muslim people, isn't it ?

Jo Ann

I'd say Amsterdam!
All the cities like Paris, New York, London and Milan are outdated ;)

Kidding!
I think! :D

Sinbad

Nicolas, unfortunately it is but even if there is a certain homogenity of religion, there is a wide diversity of culture and origin during Hajj.

It was meant tongue in cheek anyway.

For me a cosmopolitan city is a city in which you can meet people from everywhere in the world. These cities are culturally rich.

Hey I've found a good definition on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmopolitan:)

The world "cosmopolitan" implies à mon avis not only the coexistence of several cultures gathered together in a relatively small space, but also the acceptance of these cultures - since you can live with lots of foreigners in the same town and just hate these bastards. ;)
The whole planet should be cosmopolitan, shouldn't it? Yeh. Whatever happened to Beirut (again)...

I found Montpelier to be very diverse, but I only spent a few days there, so I don't know if it is "cosmopolitan" (i.e., accepting of foreigners).

Good point Gryphon :one

Wow! If one has to accept other cultures that would narrow down the number of cosmopolitan cities, I think. How many cities have a true mix of cultures compared to the number where particular ethnic groups tend to cluster in certain areas?

Is this ghetto-isation an economically driven occurence or is the economic pressure being used as a tool to keep people in their place?

Jo Ann

CLG>>> Montpellier is indeed cosmopolitan! :P It's fun to get in a tramway and hear all kinds of languages... I absolutely love it! :)

Very interesting question, indeed ... Both are true?

that's maybe a weird comparison but for me this question sounds like "what came first? the egg or the chicken?"

London In Europe

NY in the US

I'm going to throw in for Toronto, my home town, not the glitzyest fanciest place in the world, but very mixed, so possibly cosmopolitan.  the UN declared it the most culturally diverse city in the world, and we don't all hate each other....It's a nice place to live.  Doesn't make the papers much, but that can be a good thing.

Shanghai in China, way more than Beijing...
Toronto, I totally agree.
And of course, Vienna !!
