It started this week when a young man asked for some roses I think to give to his school teacher. I said yes and he took some then came back with more school children who I allowed to take roses. That was this Monday, then he came back Tuesday night with two younger looking lads both of whom had an egg, they asked for money and I said no so while I was back inside my house the boys threw the eggs at my steps to the upstairs accomodation. I told my neighbour and she said it was Roma children and to ignore it. Last night this boy came back and to eat my attention threw small stones at my steps, my neighbour came out of her home and shouted at him, then she phoned the mayor to tell him. I'm in my 70s and live in the village alone and don't drive how can I stop this happening again?
He asked my neighbour if she knew who they were and if I had a photo but the answer is no to both his questions. He does have a village Facebook page though and someone I know who lives a long way from me says that if the children's families find out about their behavior then it should stop. Which I hope is true.
To be fair this boy doesn't strike me as the brightest bulb in the box and I think that in some ways he's being used by the other lads involved and is enjoying the attention but I also think that if he's identified he'll be left to face the music alone. But I just want the disruption to stop and in the future I'll not be giving any roses away.
We bought the house in the winter of 2017 and I've been living here on my own since August 2023 because my husband an only child is in the UK looking after his elderly frail.mother. I've never had anything like this happen before I dont drive and more to the point I don't drink in any of the village bars , I keep myself to myself so this is a first for me. My younger son is coming over to stay at the end of June for a week and when he stayed earlier this year their was no problems . I'm happy living here keeping myself to myself.

It does sound like, he is trying join in with the popular gang and he was being used.
If you haven't seen them before, they could be testing the water to see if you lived on your own and no one else coming out to deal with other than your neighbour.
I'm guessing if their family were to find out, it would stop as the family wouldn't want trouble from the mayor brought to their doorstep.
Maybe have a camera/mobile phone at hand and if they try it again, make yourself visible to them taking pictures. That might just do the trick? If it doesn't send it them to the mayor.
It is a tough one, when you're not fluent in the local language and have to rely on others.
Not sure what law is, could drench them with a water from a hose pipe, but I wouldn't want you to get get in trouble as that might be counted as assault?
I'm considering having a security camera fitted but I think that your correct regarding him trying to be a part on the "in crowd" but as far as I can tell he's not turned up with the same set of people in the three times he's turned up. Hopefully the Mayor will deal with it he has a bar just round the corner from the house so maybe send someone round for a walk past.
I'm not going to respond to them for the very reasons you have stated. There's a village funfair celebration happening in the village this weekend so fingers crossed that maybe an end to it. Thanks for your reply.
Hugs, Kath. How frustrating and distressing! I think as @SimCityAT says, coming out with your camera and taking photos is the best way to deal with it. At least them you can show them to the mayor who will talk to the parents. But knowing they'll be identified in itself could be enough to stop them.
Unfortunately our small town in the UK has similar problems with bands of feral kids roaming around causing trouble.
I can tell you Jane that's the last time I do someone a favour no more end of term roses from my garden. Anyway the Mayor knows now so hopefully that will be an end to it , fingers crossed.
I hope so, Kath!

Be careful when having security cameras fitted - it's illegal for a private person to have a camera sited where it has a view, however small, of anyone else's private property, or of a public road/street. As in the UK, the cops in BG are normally useless when it comes to investigating burglaries etc, but they're as keen as mustard about hassling homeowners who might be infringing a potential burglar's right to privacy....
@Kath948381 hope your mayor sorts the little bugger
Thank you jimj ,Jane ,simcatand Micky. Firstly I equate a security camera as having something worth stealing which I don't so I'd really have to think carefully about installing one. Secondly I had no problems with the boy involved last night thankfully. I'm.not used to such problems ad my last home jn the UK was in a high rise flat with no outside area other than a balcony. Anyway as I said my neighbour did phone the mayor to explain my situation and it was quiet last night but then again there's a fair ground setting up in the village centre which may have distracted him for now. But fingers crossed the problem has been dealt with and because my house is situated close to several of the Mayor's properties, a shop, a bar and a wedding hall maybe he's dealt with it. Thanks again for your support adi keep you informed.

You can of course buy dummy cameras which are a great deterrent and don't cost much to buy.
@SimCityAT
A number of our neighbours here have REAL security cameras - they haven't proven to be much of a deterrent, so I wouldn't bother with a fake on. So far, we’ve been fine with outside and inside cameras, security lights, bars/metal shutters - and an attack cat..
Thankfully in all the years we've had this house we've not had anything taken from inside but did lose a fruit tree ,a small marble table and two small flag stones taken from the garden in the early years. It's not uncommon for people to leave bags of shopping outside another shop while they buy something from there. I've even seen full bags left on the road while someone's nipped back to buy something else. Also I see lots of push bikes propped up somewhere unlocked outside and they're left until the owner returns for them something that j doubt would happen in the UK.
Just living here by myself is difficult sometimes but my boys from my first marriage have their own lives to lead and second husband as an only child feels obligated to love after his elderly Mum in the UK.
jim is right, you need an attack cat! Or get a pair of geese. They'll do the job of scaring off kids for you, and keep the grass short, too.
All was quiet last night thankfully. My Mum was routinely sent in her village down south in the UK and had to go through a gate where geese used to wait for her , then chase her .
Well guess who I saw today, yes the young lad who caused the problems at my home and turns out he's a resident in the village orphanage. I do feel sorry ish for him but " once bitten twice shy". He knows that I'd seen him but I just carried on walking.
@Kath948381 hope you are feeling ok. It is the route cause of these problems in every country that needs looking at and why.
Maybe it did leave me shaken because I'm here on my own and getting on a bit but hopefully it's all over now and it's a big shame but it won't happen again.
@Kath948381
Sorry to hear of your problems with kids had something similar happens to us but in the Uk. If you go down the camera route make sure they are solar powered as had a friend here that had hard wired ones and the bandits merely turned his power off whilst he was away and waited for their battery to drain and that of his alarm too then went in and burgled him.
Take care rgds ozzy
Thanks for the advice but I'll not be bothering with cameras because they seem to indicate that there's something worth nicking and I'm an old gibber living off my state pension with nothing worth taking.
@Kath948381
These beggars rob Bulgarian babas who really have nothing, so don't let your guard down. When some folks will literally steal the kitchen sink, it doesn't pay to be complacent in any way...
@Kath948381
This is the bulgaria that I know from my only two years living here.
Where everyone try to use the weak( roma is not weak, because of their numbers).
Always say NO to anything roma/turkish/ bulgarian people ask of you. Even if they want to do you a "favour", it for sure will cost you more latter!
If you won't able to show them that you can defend yourself, move to other place. No Bulgarian authority will defend you.
Fingers crossed no problems since my neighbour phoned the Mayor for me. But from now on Any will be my answer to all requests from young people. I've also found out that the original trouble maker is a resident of the village orphanage I've seen him there but had not said anything to anyone .
Any request will be told Nay from now on.
@Nate Will
Any village - you're guaranteed to have a few scallywags everywhere. This one sounds pretty peaceful: one village where I almost bought a country pad was recently the scene of a mass brawl between the local Roma and Pomaks; it ended with the fatal stabbing of a Pomak and several Roma hospitalised with fractures. All the Roma left the village over the next few days, much to the delight of the rest of the inhabitants; their hopes were dashed, however - the petty thievery that had been blamed on the Roma still continued....
Yes Jim in the main it's a peaceful village and not being far from the black Sea coast there's enough employment to keep people occupied. There's a lot of Roma in the village but in they're either employed or studying. And they usually have more than me as well.
