Hi there:
I am in desperate need to get an International Driver's Permit before June 21st. I have a valid American driver's license. I already passed the Spanish written driving test, but at the "autoescuela" they have told me that's going to be a very long time before I can take the practical exam.
I understand that in the US the only official organization that issues these permits is the AAA, but to apply from abroad you need to do it by mail and they take between 5 and 7 weeks to send you the permit. There are other non official companies that offer permits online and mention the following: "an internationally accepted, unofficial translation of your Domestic Driver's License that can be used in most countries that require one for driving or renting. The documents are regulated by the United Nations. Our IDL is valid if you have a valid driver's license from your home country. Additionally, the documents issued will be in accordance with the Geneva Convention on Road Traffic of 1949. This information will be displayed on the front of your documents".
Has anyone used any service other than the AAA one and been stopped by the Spanish police with no problem?
