We are a retired couple of 68 years young. We are in the process of selling a rental flat  and our residential home.   We are looking at Alicante as you seem to get more for your money .   I drive but my wife does not.    Although my wife is the driving force in wanting to move I have major concerns about medical concerns . She suffered a anyurism  ruptured about 10 years ago . She has 3 treated and coiled and one untreated due to its position and also 7 stents fitted in her brain .  She is on a cocktail of tablets Dailey.  At all recent scans they show as being stable . But still a worry.  Any advice on an area of Alicante that is close to hospital that has major  nuero deptment.  We are also looking for an area that has lots of groups and activities.  Many  Thanks Derek

I think Alicante is a very good choice. It's a nice city, and the Costa Blanca is lovely. And, in general, Spain's a pretty relaxing place to hang out with nice food, culture and weather (extremely hot in summer in this area, you will need plenty of AC).

If you will have a car, and don't mind being a little inland, you might also consider UNESCO-listed Elche. We live here, and it's a great little city (Alicante-Elche Airport and some very nice beaches are about 10-15 minutes away). Your budget would go even further here, if our apartment were in Alicante's Playa San Juan it would cost 5-10X more!

I think the Spanish healthcare system is pretty good, and certainly comparable to the NHS. As you're retired, you shouldn't have much difficulty getting your NLVs (No Lucrativa Visa). And you'll be able to bring your S1 forms that entitle you to public healthcare in Spain.

Idealista is a large property site and a great research tool for exploring your options in different areas within a particular budget.

Good luck with the move!
