Moving to Belize with Criminal Record

Post new topic

Does anyone here know or have experience with this. I am in recovery from drug addiction, been sober several years now however I do have a record for nothing serious, just minor offenses. Felonies, Class D felonies in the state of Alabama which is basically a misdemeanor however they classify them as felonies. Things like possession of paraphernalia, possession of controlled substance, DUI, etc., nothing major like robbery or anything where a "victim" was involved. Anyone here have any experience with this type thing moving to Belize? I am self employed and have been for several years so I would be working "remotely".

I am not looking for judgement, congratulations - although appreciated, nor opinions. Any help would be appreciated as I would really like to move to Belize from the states as the inflation, cost of living, and the political situation has gotten out of hand with no signs of improvement.

Thanks in advance to those of you who may have experience with this sort of thing.

Yikes, with all the restrictions you have placed on us, it will be difficult to offer an honest answer. But i will give it a shot anyway.

I suggest you look at the Belize Government websites for their requirements' to become a resident. Or to the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) website for the QRP program. For either of these options there are things one must prove. Example, one must submit letters from former residences Law Enforcement agency(s) stating a clean record (sorry I don't recall how far back it needs to go), and good character reference.  A local interview is required with a local Belize Police department.

There are other options to staying, such as investing lots of money into Belize, I think the minimum is $500,000. The other option is to keep renewing your original 30 day Visitors Permit every 30 days at $100 USD, at a Belize Immigration office. If you fly in, you automatically have a 30 day permit stamped into your passport.

You might also want to read through some of the "Belize Breaking News" website stories, often they report on how local and others are treated when not obeying Belize law.

Good luck to you.

@cmarshall0312 Not personal experience, but have known others who had a similar story. They chose to just renew their visitor permit each month.
