Accommodation reqs for 1 year DN Visa

Hi,

I understand there is a need for a year long rental contract to be in place for the Portugal DS8. Is it feasible that you could live under normal rules for 90 days in that place whilst your visa is being processed? If the process took longer than 90 days, leave and come back when fully processed?
