We need someone to look at one of our chimneys to see if it needs repair or replacing. Someone to knock down our garage that has an asbestos roof ,replace the metal fence  and gate with a higher one and take everything away . Any ideas?

Silly question but have you asked the neighbours? It's always a good idea to get a personal recommendation from a local.

I have a British friend in Burgas - I'll ask him for you.

Thank you Sim and Jim

Sorry but apparently he's still looking for "masters" himself with no luck.  I had a quick ferret on FB and noticed that there's this group which might well be of use: Майсторите на Бургас.

Thank you Jimj, anyway. Ive asked my neighbours in the passed and they've only suggested people they've thought of using , looked at the work they've done found out how much it cost me and haven't used them, so maybe I should ask the village Mayor.

Yep, that was going to be my other suggestion, ask the Mayor, they will be sure to know of someone. If they do, you can say they were recommended by the Mayor, they will probably do an extra good job?

Unfortunately, that's likely to be wishful thinking. I've used builders/tradesmen recommended by friends, colleagues, specialist suppliers, property developers, local kmets etc and they've ALL varied from shoddy to abysmal. Workers are in such demand (and many customers apparently such poor judges of standards of workmanship - and safety) that they have punters queuing up, and they aren't bothered by adverse reports on their work.

Also, local kmets are no better judges of craftsmanship than anyone else, and in addition have friends who need work/favours to repay/scores to settle/votes to buy etc.

Unfortunately, bodgers are also just as likely to give you the highest quote - and hire the cheapest "workmen".

Based on my limited experience, it's very much luck of the draw. Even recommendations from neighbours can be based on wanting to help someone else who is perhaps having problems finding work.

I had this in two cases for building work, one very old guy who worked hard but who was a bodger, and one very skilled guy but who apparently needed frequent kicks in the rear to get him moving. To their credit, the neighbour did also get in and work alongside them both times, too. One recommendation from the neighbours was excellent, the electrician, but unfortunately the more skilled of the pity cases also altered some of his electrical work  but didn't quite complete the job, and I suspect that's why they now seem reluctant to call the electrician back to do the front section of the house for me. :(

The best recommendation came from one of the office staff in the kmetsvo, when I hadn't gone in looking for advice on builders! I'd gone in for help getting some paperwork printed, my neighbour discussed how the first roofers they'd suggested I try had given a ridiculously high quote, the admin person (who lived in the next town, not the village) suggested the builders she'd used for her roof. They did an excellent job at a far lower price than the first quote. But that was an accidental recommendation!
