Please, can I rent a boat without a license in Phu Quoc?

Alalba Alba

Hi,

We are visiting the island only for 6 days…i don’t enjoy soaking up the sun without much to do and Phu Quoc doesnt scream adventure to me…so If I am going, I’d like to rent a boat, without a captain…

thanks for any leads,

carmen

Not sure about renting a boat without a captain but I can say my wife and I hired a captain and boat to pretty much give use a totally custom tour of the island for snorkeling, fishing, island hopping and everything we wanted to do. It was very reasonably priced.

Hello Alalba Alba. Welcome to the expat.com Vietnam forum.

Would you tell us, please, what you mean by "boat"?

I'll be in An Thoi tomorrow and can ask there for you.

Maybe check with the Coast Guard there to see if it's even legal, especially for a foreigner on a tourist visa.

I'm betting the answer is no

Good point, and will do. I know where the CG office is, so easy enough.

I'm not sure a license will be necessary for all "boats"😉

So much to see on Phu Quoc - go to Vin Pearl, visit the faux Italian City, ride in a gondola - visit the Safari Park - I’m not a fan of zoos but this one is amazing - lots of room for the giraffes and tigers and crocodiles - huge apiary where even the largest birds can fly…

you can easily rent electric motor scooters in the Italian city

Good advice.

I'd also say that renting a boat WITH captain is pretty affordable and SAFER.

Those captains will keep you from being arrested for ignorantly straying into restricted waters or attempting to stop at a restricted beach.

Also, no matter how a boat is obtained it's THE LAW that all foreigners must be registered with the police through a legal temporary address (Hotel, Motel, Hostel, Airbnb, etc).

So if the goal is to avoid the cost of lodging on the land and live on the boat, that's definitely a great way to become a target for deportation.

Right you are, as per the VN Coast Guard officer I spoke with. A definite no on renting by a foreigner, with or without proper licensing.
