I am planning to relocate to Medan

dcominsky

Hello everyone,

Dennis here, I am planning to relocate to Medan late spring early summer 2025 for a four year duration and will be looking for information regarding housing and transportation for starters. I would really appreciate to communicate with anyone who has been in Medan and can help me navigate the ins and outs for legitimate relators and reliable 24/7 transportation. Looking forward to reading any and all information out there.

Best,

Dennis

Hi, dcominsky

The above needs a bit of editing but is mostly valid.

If it's priced in Dollars, look somewhere else.

A hotel for a couple of weeks. Start your hunt by asking the hotel staff - Receptionist, cooks, security, the guy sweeping the leaves.

They might well ask for a commission, but there's a good chance you'll find a starter place.

Transport.

I believe Bluebird taxis operate in Medan.

Install the app.

Their drivers tend to be good, and they don't rip you off.

I had two duff drivers this year, but none in the 5 or 6 before.

That was one who tried the tourist route that took us about 20 plus KM too far.

Showing the driver your sat nave app is on fixes the very rare occasions a driver is bad news.

I've been to Medan a few times over the years, but I think it is the least attractive city to live in in Indonesia. The good thing used to be the close proximity to Lake Toba, but it seems even that is no longer so good as people often talk about the speed boats and jet skis that speed across the water all day long.

It's horses for courses.

There might well be a specific reason for an expat to decide on a given town. My first experience was Wonosobo. A lot would hate the place, but I liked it. Add the people around you, and you can forget a good life.

I've never been to Medan, but I'd like to when I get a moment.
