New Process for British Consulate on affirmations.

Dear Customer

We are writing to inform you that there has recently been a change to the process of getting married in Morocco.

Our records show that you have applied and made an appointment, to obtain a marriage affirmation with either the British Embassy in Rabat or the British Honorary Consulate in Marrakesh.

The Moroccan Courts are now only accepting marriage affirmations from British Nationals who are resident in Morocco. Our records show that you are residing in the United Kingdom (UK). To ensure the Moroccan Courts recognise your documents we advise you to obtain a Certificate of No Impediment from your local council and a certified copy of your passport. This means you no longer need to apply for a marriage affirmation through the Embassy or the Honorary Consulate if you live in the UK and you can obtain the documents you need before you arrive in Morocco.

On account of this change, from 3 December we will be cancelling appointments and refunding payments for all customers who reside in the UK. We appreciate that this may cause some inconvenience, but we believe this change will improve the process for British Nationals living in the UK who wish to marry in Morocco by removing additional administration and the need to wait long periods of time to find available appointments.

To minimise the potential impact this may have on your plans, we advise you to begin the process of obtaining the relevant documents from the UK as soon as possible.

This is a scam. Be careful all.

Umarulhasan

This is true statement from UK embassy. This is NOT a Scam.

All you need is a certificate of no impediment from the uk apsotilled, passport photo page photocopy certified firstly by solicitor to be a true copy and then sent off for apostille.

You do NOT need to go to the consulate because you’ll find no apportionment because the scammers in Morocco have booked them all just to sell them later for a rip off price. So do NOT buy appointments from anyone. Let this fraudulent business of selling appointments die!

@SavannahRE

If this is real, its a huge and positive change. I know loads of British- Moroccan couples who had to wait months to get their marriage affirmed. Top that with Moroccan scammers using bots to book all slots and selling it for money.

Good move British Consulate.

@SavannahRE

Looks like a scam best to check or call the embassy in Rabat directly or use an interpreter. You could also check with Moroccan embassy in UK. Good luck

SavannahRE

This is NOT a scam. This is official communication from the embassy themselves.

they even updated the gov.uk website. Try and book an appointment while noting you’re a UK resident, it will instruct you to follow the above process.

@SavannahRE

Hi, when was your appointment booked for? I have one in the second week of January is mine going to be cancelled now?

SavannahRE

Check your email @rvrltn.

With all likelihood all appointments from 3 Dec will be cancelled and only British citizens non resident in the UK will need to book an appointment using the new system.

if you are a UK resident, you no longer need an appointment. Just follow the Gov.uk guidance to get a Certificate of Impediment from your local council

@Said Idouarab

It is *NOT* a scam, it is an official communique from HM government - check the advice on the British embassy website yourself.

Stop spreading fake news. Stop commenting on things you know NOTHING about.

Umarulhasan

finally we have some sense in the UK government.

The scammers are upset!!! nobody will buy their appointments anymore. they and their bots can retire now.

@SavannahRE

It all seems a bit obscure at the minute does the CNI need to be attested at the consular in London?

Umarulhasan

@SavannahRE

Hi. Thanks for the info.

So the consulate in Morocco would previously provide affirmation of marriage certificate, and a certificate of British nationality.

the alternative of the certificate of affirmation is the CNI from the local council in the UK.

However, what’s the alternative of British nationality certificate? Where and how can we get that from the UK?

thanks.

SavannahRE

.

SavannahRE

@Rvrtltn

Nothing is further is required after CNI is issued as it’s a legal UK issued document.

SavannahRE

@Umarulhasan

The nationality should be certified in the UK. The process is simple and guidance is provided in the gov.uk website in link at end of this message. It requires a certified legal solicitor in the UK to simply state it is a true copy of your passport issued by HMPO (there are other ways to do it but this is the simplest in my opinion). I have done this before for alternative services I was seeking outside the UK (not marriage). They provide you a seal on a copy of the passport you carry with the original (it cost me 20£ when I did it in 2023).

by the way, you can also then go ahead to legalise the document which is a service provided by the UK govt where they Apposite the document, this is only done after it is certified by a solicitor. I am just unsure if you need to do both steps for marriage in Morocco or just one (this may be more clear with time or dependant on the court officials in Morocco)

Guidance for both certifying and legalising documents is as below.

https://www.gov.uk/certifying-a-document

https://www.gov.uk/get-document-legalised

Umarulhasan

That’s very helpful indeed. Thanks!

Umarulhasan

Did you legalise the CNI as well or would legalising that not be required? I’ve been told to bring it legalised.

SavannahRE

@Umarulhasan

Not required to legalise the CNI as per the Consulate.

They also mentioned a certified copy of the passport is only required.

The Moroccan courts should accept them as they have been advised as such.

Has anyone recently attempted to get married with the new paperwork system? Any help would be amazing
