Costs for non-EU citizens who wish to live in Malta..

keithbarry

I've been wondering what anyone thinks about the exraordinary costs now required by the Maltese Government iff non-EU Citizend want to live in the Maltese Islands..

I might mention: 'especially those from the UK. We used to have a 'special relationship' which began hunfreds of years ago. Now it appears that we are  being punished financially!

We are not being punished, we are being treated like any other non EU country - as chosen by the our fellow countrymen who voted for this situation.

You do not need to pay large amount of money, get a job from someone who will sponsor your visa, same as any other TCN.

Don't blame Malta blame Brexit.

The latest fees (total close to 1 million Euro) have put us out of reach now.

I think that's for citizenship not to come and live here,

Where do you get that number from?

@volcane

Well, it's not a matter of getting a job for me as I've been retired for 13 years.

And anyway, I still think that anyone would have to pay more for an apartement than anyone else, plus the 'fees' to the government etc etc.

Being an EU citizen or non EU citizen makes no difference in renting an apartment.

It seems you have a low opinion  of Malta & it's people ?

I wonder why you want to live here?

In that case the situation is the same for you as any non EU person, the costs is a processing fee of less than 3000 and you need to rent for 750+ a month if in Gozo.

They don't charge you more for your apartments because you are British etc, you seem to hold a lot of confused prejudices about the place

Quite, I would love to know where these members are getting the information from? We're missing something obviously.....?

What Volcane has explained is completely correct. The costs are same as any non EU person, you are not being "punished financially" because you are British. The rent costs of €750+ a month in Gozo, realistically are the current market, this is regardless of what nationality the tenant is, even if they were locals. In my experience as a British woman in her 60's who has been looking at rentals in Gozo, elderly British are the unofficial number one preferred tenants for local landlords. 😂

As far as processing fees are concerned, if the scenario was reversed and my Maltese husband (married for 40 years) and I wished to retire to the UK, due to Brexit, I would have to pay at least the same amount to apply for a spouse visa for him to reside there with me, despite me being a UK citizen.

As GozoMo stated "Don't blame Malta. Blame Brexit". Unfortunately at the time of the Brexit vote I had been living abroad for too long to still be entitled to vote, even though the outcome caused myself and many others numerous repercussions.

The fees are not even close to one million euros. The guidelines and fees can be found here:

The minimum value of the property that is required to be purchased or rented is quite modest compared with the current property market values.

It cost me a lot more than 3000 in legal fees and government shenanigans to get my British long term residency as a TCN not to mention costs associated with naturalisation and obtaining my British passport.

Rest assured, no matter how bad the situation is EU treats TCNs better than the UK does :)
