Happy 2025. starting with question for Belgian citizenship

nyamani77

Hello,

I wish you all a fantastic 2025 where all your dreams will come true.

2025 will be a special year for me as I will complete 5 years of my stay in Belgium (specifically 21 July 2025), I have many inquiries here and there where you can help me to answer:

I lived in many western countries USA >France > Canada > Belgium and my experience were great and I am very grateful to this, but I like Belgium above all of them due to many personal reasons, but general reasons is the quality of life is the highest among them in my own experience, some people might not agree but those are personal choices.

Nevertheless, my questions are:

1- Language:

I lived in France 10 years ago and went to an intensive French course, I received (level-C1), and nowadays in Belgium, I do speak French fluently. I even won an award for French short stories competition back then lol.

do I still have to re-do a language proficiency exam for the purpose of citizenship?

2- integration course:

I heard about this all the time, but never understand what is it? is it a long course? how long it will take and should everyone take it, could you kindly send me a link on how to register and prepare before 21 July

3- Birth certificate:

my actual birth certificate is in Arabic. I translated it when I was in France 10 years ago from the Embassy over there, is this enough? or should I re-do this part here in Belgium? if yes, do you have any recommendation about a place where they do this? thanks a lot

4- Time to start the application:

As I will complete 5 years on 21 July, and I understand process is taking long sometimes, is it wise to start the application for unlimited residency earlier than this date?  I know I will not be able to apply for unlimited work permit due to some interruption on my stay, but I hold card-A since first day in Belgium until this moment.

note:

  1. I came to Belgium on a Belgian grant 2020 to 2022 for medical research > I worked 2022 to December 2023> I paused from work for personal reasons from December 2023 to October 2024 but was residing in Belgium
  2. my commune is Woluwe Saint-Lambert, Brussels

5- having a baby:

I am expecting a baby this year, but most likely before I granted the citizenship. Is it easy for the baby to receive the citizenship few months after birth or how is the process exactly? will the baby receive my initial nationality? it is not clear to me. thank you

6- Lawyer:

Do I need a lawyer to expedite all this?

Does completing 5 years in 21 July 2025 mean that there is a high chance that I will receive the citizenship before the end of 2025? will I celebrate 01/01/2026 with my Belgian citizenship? will lawyer accelerate this process or it does not matter?

I thank you very much, I feel I forget some questions but will add new post if I remember further question smile.png

Kind regards,

Hi,

One if the condition to apply for citizenship is to hold an unlimited card, so you should start from that first.

happy new year dear

maharaji1984

@nyamani77

Happy new year!

1- You have to prove your language with an official certificate given in Belgium.

2- Course given by different authorities in different regions (Brussels bon dot be Antwerp Atlas Gent Amal etc.) There are different options digital,class,weekend,evening,day etc.End of the course there is an easy test that i believe you will pas as a residence here 5 years.

3-Certificate shouldn't be older than 6 months , You should get a new one in your country , apostille -> legalize -> translate (Dutch-French or German) according to region.

4-You can only apply for unlimited resident permit once your official 5 years in Belgium completed. Not citizenship application. First unlimited residence.

5-Congratulations for your baby . Baby also can go through naturalization . For conditions i reccomend you contact in townhall when you go for your own application.

6-If you have possibility go ahead. But will not make an exception or speed the process.

Calculation :

From 21.07.2025 to unlimited residence  may take up to 4 months so lets say 21.11.2025 you would get your unlimited residence.

From 21.11.2025 to citizenship may take up to 6 months , so lets say 21.05.2026

Celebrate first birthday of your baby and  your citizenship together :)

Good luck.

@maharaji1984

Thank you so much for your reply, appreciated

but if I already worked in Belgian institutions and did a significant contribution to the community plus volunteering jobs in French, would this exempt me from re-doing French language?

thanks again

Liwane

Hi,

I wouldnt recommend you apply for unlimited residence before 5 years of stay.

Good luck!

Can someone tell me how to calculate the completion of 5 years? Is it from the time i got my annexe 49 or the date mentioned in the A Card. There is 50 day gap between the annexe 49 and the receipt of the physical residence permit

harshtayal13

@Srizzy

It is from the date you received your physical card unfortunately.

RKSI

Hello,

To apply for nationality does it need 465 working days with social security tax paid proof?

Kindly share your experience.

Thanks

tunde4elohim

@Srizzy

Yes, it’s from the date you got your annex 49 (actual date you submitted your first application at the commune), NOT the 1st date of registration on your first card. You can see the date on your first address on irisbox address history.

I’m speaking purely from experience, already got my L - Card same way and waiting for a positive response on my citizenship application.

maharaji1984

@tunde4elohim

Which document(s) did you provide for L card?

tunde4elohim

@maharaji1984

I proved my 5 year uninterrupted stay by providing my individuel compte payslip for the 5 year period.

  1. Criminal extrait to show my clean records
  2. Mutuelle/health insurance letter
  3. Work permits

That's what I can remember for now, but you can always visit your commune/send them an email for the list of doc required.

maharaji1984

@tunde4elohim

Thank you for reply.

Which commune was ?

I will apply soon but i can not provide compte invidiual due to the payrool company does this in end of the may.

Criminal record from where do we need to extract ?

tunde4elohim

@maharaji1984

  It was Evere, Brussels.

The individuel compte payslips is required for citizenship actually (not L-card application)

I just checked the email from my commune and this was their requirement for the L-card:

  1. All work permits

  1. International Passport

  1. Criminal record (you can download it from irisbox)

  1. 4 months latest Pay slip

  1. Health insurance

I'll advise you contact your commune to confirm the docs for a smooth processing of your application

maharaji1984

@tunde4elohim

Thank you and good luck.

@RKSI

Hi ,

There are different circumcitances and different options. But in our case there are two options.

  1. You have to work 4** days officially in 5 years + language certificate + integration certificate + unlimited residence permit

or

  1. 5 years non stop work+ unlimited residence permit and no other condition..

@harshtayal13

The date which was you register your self in the commune, try to find in history (in my case - Certificat_de_résidence_principale_avec_historique)
