Cost of living in Japan in 2025

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

Every year, we invite you to share your experiences with the cost of living in in Japan, especially in the region or city you live in. Your insights will greatly help members planning their move to Japan or already living there.

Here are some points to guide you; the idea is to provide average prices for each category:

What is the cost of renting or buying an apartment or house in Japan?

What are the typical fares for public transportation such as buses, subways, trains, trams, or taxis?

Could you share the average monthly cost of your grocery shopping?

How much does health insurance cost? What is the price of a medical consultation in Japan?

What are the tuition fees for children?

What are the average monthly costs for utilities, such as electricity, gas, water, internet, and phone plans?

How much do you spend monthly on leisure activities?

If there are other expenses you find relevant, please feel free to share them!

Thank you for your contribution.

Cheryl, please don’t sprinkle salt over my wounds like this... I mean, seriously, if there's one thing I really care about, it’s ciggies! 🥺 The government has decided to slap a whopping 10% tax hike on my cute little nicotine babies! Now, tell me... how am I supposed to survive this madness? How am I supposed to keep my sanity intact when the government is literally trying to snatch away my lifeline? Sad times 100, my friend. 😩

In the last 30 years I've been here, I’ve never seen prices rise this fast or this aggressively. Petrol prices used to be something you didn’t even think about (remember those days when your car could actually get a full tank for a reasonable amount?). Now it feels like I’m selling my soul for a couple of liters! 🤑 And don’t get me started on the yen-dollar rate! It’s like the currency went through a midlife crisis, and groceries, halal food, meat? You name it, it’s all skyrocketed faster than my hopes and dreams during a budget check. And traveling? Well, let's just say my suitcase is gathering dust as the cost of a plane ticket is now equivalent to my firstborn’s college tuition. 😜

So yeah, Cheryl, we’re all in this together. The struggle is real. Stay strong, my fellow survivor!
