Hello everyone. My wife, daughter and I have just returned from a three week vacation in Romania where we travelled from Bucharest to Baia Mare are then Baia Mare to Brasov. Our purpose for our travel was to find an area to settle in and we spent numerous hours and miles driving around Romania. We would like to settle in the Brasov county but are finding it incredibly difficult to find a rental which accepts two dogs. We are both Deputy Sheriff’s and are retiring with our canine partners (A German Shepherd and Schnauzer). We have gone through the initial steps of forming a LLC with R&R law firm in Bucharest to aid in the eventual purchase of a home and obtaining long stay visas while my wife works on her Polish citizenship. We are finding the real estate agents to be very unsupportive in our efforts. We had one agent with Remax in Brasov set us up for a home that would accommodate us only to cancel on the first date we were to view the home and then ghost us on the second date. We have travelled extensively around the world in the last 30 years and understand that “things” are different everywhere, however we are finding the lack of knowledge in certain areas concerning certain subjects very surprising. Is the lack of assistance by the locals due to the fact that we are Americans? Our goal is to rent for a year while we explore our options for purchasing in Brasov County. Would anyone have insight or advice? Thank you all in advance.

In my experience, the fact that you're Americans would not be an impediment here, quite the opposite... I would rather suspect your difficulty in finding rentals is related to the would be Landlord's concern about having their property damaged by your dogs. What I would suggest is to make it clear upfront that you would pay for any such damage were it to occur.

It is common for rental contracts in Romania to have a security deposit for covering potential property damage, in an amount equivalent to about one month's rent, refundable at the end of the contract.

Were you to offer a larger such deposit (say two month's rent) to cover additional risk of damage by your dogs, I believe would go a long way toward putting the Landlord's mind at ease...

Thank you for your advice. It is very helpful. I will do just that.
