Mains Water stop cock

phildraper

I was looking to turn off the water in the house and when I looked at the main stop cock in the garden I see that it has been installed so close to the ground it will not allow the lever to go to the off position. As this side of the water meter probably is the responsibility of the water company I am guessing I will need them to come in and re-position it. Has anyone had experience of contacting the water board for a repair?

Good luck with that.... I hope THE NEW CROWD ARE BETTER THAN OUR OLD MUNICIPALITY

Most of these levers fit with a nut to keep it in place can it not be removed and refitted so the valve can be closed. Not ideal I know.

phildraper

Yes it could probably be loosened and then spun a bit but if it goes wrong there will be a lot of water as there is nothing to stop the water before this valve

I was thinking of just the lever.

Otherwise it's either a plumber with the water stop key or the municipality may have one rather than the new EOA Water Authority

phildraper

Oh good idea lol I'll check that

Can you remove the lever  and.then try and turn the valve with some mole grips

Drambuie

I wouldn't mess with the actual valve because it's a nightmare situation if you cause a leak at that point.

However most valve handle levers are much longer than is neccesary. Why not use a hacksaw and reduce the handle length so the valve can be turned off.

All good suggestions. I have managed to pull it away from the ground as all the pipes are plastic and then fully turn the handle.

Well done lad

@phildraper

👍a lot of the  properties have metal pipes in the ground that have corroded and instead of replacing the pipe work they attached plastic piping onto the pipe part which was in good order.  In our region they have been out slowly replacing the pipe work due to the water loss.

I came home last month to find them replacing the pipework and the water pressure has greatly improved
