Thanks for asking that question Bhavna 🙏

That really is the number one question to be considered by anyone thinking about relocating here.

Hi Chantal,

Wow, that is such an open-ended question, largely dependent upon what type of life you are looking to create for yourself here.

In general, Vietnam is actually rated as one of the safer countries in the world.

But the worst crime and safety issues sadly develop primarily in expat friendly neighborhoods, the areas where tourists and other foreigners tend to gravitate together.

The most popular places draw the foreigners, and then the presence of the foreigners who have more money than the locals, draws out the criminal element.

Scams in all types of things such as rental offers and purchase prices are much more prevalent in the areas that foreigners find to be the most desirable.

Contrary to what many people might think though, a lot of the criminal activity is created by foreigners on foreigners.

It's really important to be careful who you accept as friends when you relocate here and encounter other groups of foreigners.

I recommend trying not to find the cheapest of everything, meaning housing.

pay a little more and get more security and live with slightly more responsible people. pay a lot less you will have less security and you surround yourself with people who very well may have a criminal record in the country they just left.

this may sound overly dramatic, but in my 7 years living here since I returned in 2018, I see the greatest problems with crime and safety concerns developing amongst the nomads and backpackers who seem to feel that they are not accountable to anyone.

Vietnamese people are much more respectful of the police than are foreign visitors.

it would really help if you could give us an idea what areas are already starting to interest you.

then maybe we can help you find the best option for an enjoyable but safe life.

Welcome to the forum! 🙏

Hi petale64 (Chantal). A couple more questions, if I may.

What is the intended duration of your visit? Will this be a visit by your BF and yourself as tourists? A possible longer term stay?

When is your intended arrival date? I ask due to the variation in weather patterns in the north, central, and south regions of the country.

Hi petele, VietNam isthe safest country in the world. You can start from big cities, for example HaNoi, HaLong, DaNang, HCMC,...

I live in the largest city in Southern Vietnam - Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). It is also known as called Saigon. Anyhow, I’ve been here for 9 years. During this time my wife had here phone stolen once - that’s it. The worst thing that’s ever happened.

Women and children regularly (like every night) walk the streets alone at night. I have heard about 1 lady who got raped on an elevator and 2 family related murders over a 9 year period.

In my humble opinion it is extremely safe here In HCMC and everything I’ve heard would indicate the rest of Vietnam is the same. The people are all very nice and will go out of there way to help you. I don’t think there is anyplace in Vietnam that is not safe. Come on over. You’ll be safe wherever you decide to settle down.
