Where Do All the Expats Go?

Post new topic

missfootloose

I'm an expat writer, hail from the Netherlands, and have lived, worked, shopped, written stories, cooked, mothered and adventured in the US, Kenya, Ghana (twice), Indonesia, Palestine, Armenia and other fun places around the globe.  Now looking to find a new perch in a warm, easy going place with kindred souls.  Where is it?  Where are you?  My stories are here:  www.lifeintheexpatlane.blogspot.com

I want to go to Australia :-D

Spain is always a safe-ish choice, but that might be too close to home?

I would like to go to Sweden very much, but im afraid it will never happen...

It doesn't get better then the Dominican Republic. Great weather, beautiful beaches, beautiful people (inside and out), not too many rules, laid back lifestyle for the most part.
Have not looked back for a nano second.

Yes, I've heard good things about the Dominican Republic.  It's important to me that it is easy to connect with friendly locals, which is certainly not the case in some countries I've lived in.  I'd want to make the place home and feel at home.

I'm also wondering about the expat community -- are there interesting international people or is it mostly retired Americans looking for sunshine, cheap living and not much else? (And this would not be me).  Is there an artist or writers community?

If you have time, I would appreciate your input!

missfootloose,

We are on the north coast of the DR (hurricane proof) with a large active expat community. Here Americans are in the minority.  In our own area (development) there are US, Canadian, Swiss, German, Italian, Croatian, Dominican, Brits, and Scandadavians.  So quite the mixed bag. It is a very friendly and supportive group of folks that live here in the area. There are a few artists and writers here but not real expat arts community.

Let me know if you have other questions either here or with a PM

Bob,

That sounds very good! We may come and scout around for a couple of weeks later this year or next spring.  Thanks for the info.  Appreciate your taking the time to write.  You do not have a public blog?

Come to Turkey. Is it European? Not according to Expat.com. It's Middle East. And that's the great thing about living here. You get Turks insisting they are European and their best friend will look at them like they are stupid. 'No, we are Middle Eastern.' Whatever they are, we are English and haven't looked back since making Turkey our home.
