Language Barrier

Living in Dubai, the language barrier isn't so bad. With Dubai being such a cosmopolitan melting pot, you have people from all over. You hit the hot spots, like JBR or Marina, and you can hear a number of language from Spanish to Russian, and few African ones too.

Me, on the other hand, have always been more interested in the local language, English. Its always intrigued me and I thought, it might help me get into the culture of the place. So I went on a mission on finding me a language centre.

Now that in itself is a mission and a half. Language centres are a dime a dozen, so finding one that actually is decent would take a while.

I went to a few, had a few hit and misses and then I met Eton Institute. Have to say, friendly staff, good instructors and nice place. There were a few cheaper places, but what I like about them is that they tied it in with culture. Its the only way I got the words into my head.

Now, I'm no expert in Arabic yet, I've only finished a couple of levels, but I can probably understand a little more than when I first started. But for those who wanna check it out, its definately a good idea. Another place was Berlitz, I found it a bit more expensive, but Internatioally known, so who can complain.

Anyone else interested in languages or like learning more about UAE's culture?

I'm learning Arabic from a private tutor - he's excellent.
