Doing business in Myanmar
Hi,
are foreign investors welcome in Myanmar?
Is it complicated to register a company in Myanmar? What is the procedure?
What is the corporate tax rate in Myanmar?
Is it easy to recruit?
Any advice you would share with us?
Thank you very much for your participation,
Julien
Hi Julien
Things are changing all the time but as yet foreigners are not allowed to own anything in Myanmar, not even a mobile phone or car. Clearly there are foreign companies operating here though so if you want to do business here you need to make a Burmese friend who can explain the process.

There is an easy way that you should do a Joint Venture with a Myanmar Company through a Law firm. I refer the link.
What the corporate tax rate in Myanmar?
Here is a Link. http://www.myanmars.net/myanmar-business/main.htm

Hi there
corporate tax depends on what business you are carrying out there
the government can give tax free for certain business if agriculture, fishery, mining. stuff that will help them
foreign business cannot own land. there is business district for foreigners to start up their business there. office space rental can be from US$3 per sq metre.
i know of lawyer who can help you set up your business there
just be ready for service charge. if you know what I mean.
the labour cost is as good as those compared to Vietnam. Some are conversant in English
by the way what business you intend to start up? care to share with me?

Hi, this is Paul...
We are not realy interested on investing or starting business in Myanmar.
Important to us would be to find responsible Myanmar people who are willing to work with us to bring a simple solar powered lantern (to replace the traditional oillamp)
to rural areas to the people who have no access to the power-grid and bring green and save technology to the poor.
We are trying to do the same thing in Cambodia.
Just visit the website of Kamworks to understand what we are doing.
We also want to introduce solar Home systems and other solar powered applications to Myanmar.
Anybody have some bright ideas?
Reason for my reply to Julien is his mention of "is it easy to recruit... 100%"
Beacuase that's what we need... contacts...
Best regards,
Paul

I would like you all to advise me in starting business here. First, I thought of introducing a casino along with my business colleagues from Thailand. But, I assume the Government still prohibits it though democracy has been adopted. Now, I am thinking of buying some shares here. Would you like to recommend how much and which company to purchase shares? Stocks and bonds market is risky but I would like to ride the bandwagon, thank you.
Hi Benjamin,
There is no security exchange in Myanmar. Some Myanmar public companies do invite individuals to join their company through share placement but not very popular. But Foreigners do not allow to buy those shares. You can only form join venture company with trusted local partners.
Where are you located currently? Are you in Myanmar (Yangon) at present? Do you have any other business interest there? I will be in Myanmar around 7th March and we can meet up in Yangon if you are still there. Please drop me email at kabyar@yahoo.com, if you are keen to meet up. We can discuss further for business opportunities in Myanmar.
Regards,
Matt
My partner and I have worked in Myanmar previously as teachers for an international school, but want to return as private teachers. How can we do this?
What are the laws/opportunities to start a small english tutoring company run by native english speakers? How do we get and what type of visa might we be eligible for?
Is it possible to get a business visa without being "hired" by a Myanmar company to work as a private tutor? Would we have to pay tax/declare our wages to the government?
You can ascertain certain info from the nearest Myanmar embassy. That's where you need to obtain your visa anyway. I'm sure you have to pay applicable income tax but ppl don't disclose actual amount. If you need any help, just let me know.
Best regards,
Win Paing.
