How to get around

Post new topic

We are visiting in a few weeks to see Belize and decide if it might be for us...if we have Corozal and Placencia both on our list and would love to pop over to Amerigris Caye...can we drive from one end to the other? Obviously we realize we can't drive to the Caye...8-)
Any suggestions on spots to add to our "must do" list - also we'd love to stay in B and B's owned by expats???!!!
Any help you offer would be much appreciated and if we see you there, we'd love to buy you a beer!!
Thanks, kathryn  (kate)

Yes, of course you can drive. Belize is a small country. Just know that rented cars, like most cars in Belize are not overly reliable, roads are  poor and often muddy. one of the option would be to take a local small plane. There are two companies: Tropic Air and Maya Island Air. Tropic flies from Corozal to San pedro, or you can fly to placencia first. many people would add Cayo: many expats live there and the cost of living is lower than on the coast. Another option is a bus. inexpensive, alas mostly uncomfortable, as they are old US schoolbuses.

From Corozal, you can take the Northern Highway to the Western Highway, then go through Belmopan and catch the Hummingbird Highway, which will take you to the Southern Highway and on to Placencia. These highways are very well maintained and you should have no trouble driving on them.

While B&B\'s do exist, they are not as popular in Belize as small boutique inns and hotels. In Placencia, you might want to check out Ally\'s Guest House or Maya Beach Hotel - they sound like places you would like. In Corozal, check out Sea Breeze Inn and say hi to the owner Gwen - he\'s a great guy. Also, before Placencia is Hopkins, and Beaches and Dreams Seafront Inn is there, owned by a very nice Expat, Tony.
