Hi guys, I am a South African that got a job offer and accepted to work in Port Louis, Mauritius. I'm a born and bred Capetonian.

As my thread reads, I will commence my new job on the 1st of September 2009. Yip 30 days and counting...

I know there have been other threads that dealt with the topic of living in Mauritius, but none has really been about recent circumstances, with the recession and all. How has the recession hit Mauritius? Has prices increased drastically? How is the cost of living in Port Louis? I heard Port Louis earns the second highest income per capita in Africa. Second only to Jo'burg.

Anyways, I will be working for a Financial company in Mauritius. It would be great if people can reply to my thread. I would really appreciate it. I know no-one in Mauritius, and have also never met a Mauritian, besides one of the guys that interviewed me.

Oh, I will be renting a 2 bedroom fully furnished apartment for about Ru 10,000.00 p/m. Is that a good price? How much do you need to earn to live comfortably in Mauritius?

And most importantly, how is the social scene in terms of night life in Mauritius?

;);)Hi Zammie!

First of all I hope all goes well with your move to Mauritius on 1st September!!  I'm moving there too on Sept 9th with my two children to join my husband who has been living there since Jan this year, he loves it!!  We will be living in Tamarin in the Black River area wich is lovely ;-)

I think we are paying 75,000 p/m for our property which is a four bedroom/3 bathroom/ swimming pool on a private estate.  Have no idea if this is competitive or not but its a brand new house with very stylish decor and furnishings.

What area will you br living in Zammie?

Regarding your question on how the recession is affecting Mauritius....my husband says it has had an effect as the recession is global but Mauritius still has a very strong economy despite this and his bosses say "Mauritius is a nice place to watch the world recession from!"

Re night life...there are ex pat bars around...will ask my husband the names of them for you as |I'm sure he must visit them from time to time!!  There are quite a number of South African ex-pats in the Tamarin area too.

Good luck with everything and keep in touch!!!

Juliet

Arh man...Thanks for your message, i really appreciate it.

I will be staying in Port Louis. I'm not sure if Port Louis got suburbs, thus for now, that's all the details I have. From reading all the threads, it seems like Tamarin is like a little South Africa :).

I like your hubby's bosses sentiments about the recession... thats what one wanna hear when one basically start a new life in a new country...

Im not sure how far Black River is from Port Louis, but I am sure I will eventually find my way around and visit those ex pat bars :).

I will definately stay in touch. How are your preparations going? I only found out on Friday that I got the job, so it hasnt really sunk in yet, although I got a bit sad this morning while driving and saw the mountain on this beautifull winter's day in Cape Town... Sights and sounds hey... I'm sure there will be loads in Mauritius though, but Cape Town is where the heart is hey... I'm getting carried away here lol.

Hope to here from you soon, and dont forget those pub names .

Keep well,

Leroy(Zammie)

Julien

Welcome on Expat.com Zammie,

prices didn't change much in Mauritius. You should have a look the the South Africans in Mauritius page, and contact a few people there ;)

You should also have a look to this other thread: cost of living in Mauritius

10,000 rs is a good price for a 2  bedroom fully furnished apartment. Where is it located by the way? In Port Louis?

Vayid

Welcome to Mauritius Zammie

Well, the recession is more obvious in some areas of activities and less apparent in some others. Still, life is going on nearly normally, and cheerfully.

In view of the small size of the island, there is no difference in the cost of living between the different towns or villages. These vary according to the places where you make your shopping. Still, for food stuffs and other commonly used items, the prices are roughly the same irrespective of the region of purchase.

As regard “... the second highest income per capita in Africa ... “, that’s   quite true, but there is an enormous variance of monthly salaries ranging from US$125/- to US$ 5,000/- or even higher ones among the various categories of job.

Living “comfortably” is quite subjective. Still, I would venture to say that an income of US$ 1,500 for a single would enable you to do so.

Well, the “social scene in terms of night life in Mauritius” is quite active, and would advise you to choose well the places because as in most other countries, there are warm and hot spots, where you should be somewhat cautious.

May be when you are in Mauritius, we could talk more.

Cheers

Leroy

Hey, its Zammie here...I lost my password so had to create another one...Im working in Port Louis, but I live in Mont Choisy...So unfortunately I wont be able to help you in finding a furnished apartment in PL...sorry...

Hi there.. I guess you must be here already?  Hope the move went well..
I arrived beginning of Sept, from New Zealand. Slowly finding my feet and meeting a few people.  Am also staying near Port Louis.  The price you quoted for an appartment sounds like a very good deal, I hope it was an ok place.  For drinks, theres not much nightlife in Port Louis, but the Suffren hotel has a happy hour(s) on Friday eve, that's popular. And there's a new GastroPub in town, Lambic (find it on facebook) that's cool.. pretty european and great beerlist. Have a visitor for the next two weeks but am on for an afterwork beer after that if you like.. Tam

Hello!
I am coming to Port Louis soon. Can someone please rescue my poor soul and give me an address of the new GastroPub in town, called Lambic or some GPS coordinates (or both if possible)...
I know that's strange but I make tours before visitng a city..

And one more thing, where is the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Memorial Centre for Culture situated... I got the address - Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Street, 87, Plaine Verte, Port Louis, Mauritius,   but can't find it on map...

I would be very grateful if someone could help me :)

emp_armani

Hi Helen,

Lambic is located at St Georges Street.

The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Memorial Centre for Culture is located at the ex-Desforges Street.

You don't have GPS in Mauritius yet. Your best bet is to have a local contact.

Regards

Of  course GPS is working in Mauritius but you might not have the Mauritius map in thr GPS. Anyhow what's important is to have the coordinates and here they are:

20° 9'54.84"S  57°29'59.46"E
