Guys..

Anyone with an experience of shipping his furniture / household stuff from his / her home country? are they any customs or other fees? Any relevant tips I could use...
myself and many other Libya-to-come Expats would highly appreciate your input..

Thanks in advance

Coming from Saudi, I'd have thought you'd have this sussed?

Personal effects aren't taxed, but there are restrictions on what you can and can't personally import. Pork products, booze and porn are the big no-no's.

Make sure that your container gets shipped to either Benghazi or Misurata. It may sound daft not to send it to Tripoli, but Tripoli port suffers from major congestion and you can add another 3-6 weeks to have your goods cleared from Tripoli. Trucking from Benghazi or Misurata takes 1-2 days.

Things to look out for:

Made In Israel: If it says this on the label, remove it....

Computers and accessories: If you have the original packaging, use it as they'll open up anything that has an interesting description. I'm not aware of anyone who have had their hard drives accessed but it makes sense to remove any "personal" images.

Photography equipment: Despite the fact that you can buy cameras and video recorders here, anything more than a basic point-and-shoot camera will attract attention. A mate of mine had all his equipment confiscated for a couple of months before it was returned.

CDs/DVDs/Books: 99% guaranteed that they'll hang onto your books and CDs for a closer look. It can take many weeks to get your stuff back. A way forward is to complile a list of the titles IN ARABIC on your packing list.

For any boxes with more personal items which you prefer them not to look at, fill the box only 1/2 full and then put a load of ladies underwear on top.

If you are bringing in beer kits, remove the labels and distribute the tins singly among other boxes.

Assuming that your collection doesn't comprise Seasons 1-5 of "Chicks with Dicks" I'm sure you'll be ok
