genteel, I'd like to ask you three questions, and I realy hope you can answer them;

1- have you lived in Buraidah?
2- have you ever met with an expat in Buraidah?
3- could you tell us what kind of trouble you could get into if your an expat female (or male for that matter) in Buraidah?

let me explain something, Buraidah is known for its many famous scholars and religious figures, and is home to many of the strict and religious families, but as many as there are, there is the opposite of them who are from the same families and come from the same background and in equal numbers. (not that its a good thing to my knowledge  )

there are many public parks and also a museum in Buraidah, plus unlike many of the Kingdom cities, Buraidah is filled with agricultural spaces every where, an atmosphere city people dream of. I'm sure compounds have their own activities behind their long scure walls guarded with Saudi Military forces, and if you get to know a saudi family who just might own a farm (who doesn't in Buraidah) you can visit it and enjoy the free space. social life, once you get to know people, is an endless circle of joy in Saudi arabia, sometimes you wish there were more hours in a day. and what place to know saudies more then a simple life city like Buraidah :)

I hope you be more positive to guest's of your country genteel, if you look at a white page with a black dot in it, you can't say that the whole page is black, look at the bigger picture for a change.

Thanks

Salman

I work in Buraidah. Actuallay, Buraidah is a part of one province called Qassim. Buraidah is the main city in Qassim, but also there are other small cities like Onaizah and Al Rass.
Qassim is claasified as one of the most religous cities in Saudi Arabia, but not as people think about it, there was an old image about the extreme relgious application in Buraidah but this image has been changing clearly.
In the level of services and facilities, Buraidah is a very good but not to comapre it with Riyadh, Jeddah or Al Khobar.

Generally speaking, it depends on your work and freinds who will play a major role on your satisfaction about living there.

For any further question, feel free to ask, I'll answer them as soon as possible.

To all who have replied.
My most sincere thanks. I am heading over next week, so I will know for myself very soon.
My apologies to both Salman and Genteel_2, it was not my intention to turn this post into a debate, however, your information in your posts to each other have also proved to be quite helpful.
Thanks once again.

During my childhood, I lived for 2 months in Buraidah - 1986 and all I remember was a strict version of Islam being implemented there. For example people coming knocking on your doors if you missed a prayer etc.
I guess if you are a family person and coming from a western culture, you may find it a difficult to adapt.

Having said that, I used to go to a compound to one of my father's friend and there I saw life completely different, so if you are staying in a compound, then you should be ok...

Another thing I heard recently is that Buraidah has also gone through the changes after the internet and satellite tv channels age, and things these days are not that rigid as it used to be.:-) Good luck!!!

In general, People in the KSA do the same sort of things as people every where on Planet Earth. they get up in the morning, have breakfast, and go about their daily business. Dont need to demonise the population of a country just because they do some things a bit differently?  :)

As long as one know the land of the rules and live arround those laws, life would be OK and as in any intercultural exchange, patience and understanding are virtues that will serve people well. Living in Saudi Arabia may represent a challenge to some but a fascinating experience to many others.

BEST OF LUCK AND WELCOME TO KSA.

Dear all

reading posts especially by salman gave me a good idea about living in buraidah.
I got a job as a lecturer at qassim university, i am a Pakistan but living in Sydney, so i am travelling from sydney to join Qassim University very soon.

I am a practising Muslim, so the Islamic environment wont bother much to me. I would like to know about the rents and cost of accomodation in buraidah, and modes of transport.

Moreover are there any gym/swimming pools, fitness centres there in buraidah...and what about shared accomodation.

please guide me..

thanks..
