What work do expats do?

Hi,

I'd like to know what kind of work expats end up doing in Mauritius.  I imagine it's an interesting mixture, and am curious to know the good and bad experience people have had.

So my questions are:

1. Do you work working as an employee for a Mauritian or Foreign company?  Or have you ended up starting your own business.

2. Did you continue working in your field of expertise, or did moving to Mauritius trigger a career change?

3. What surprises did you get about working in Mauritius?  Low wages?  Unexpected working climate?  Cultural barriers?

I'd love to hear about your experiences!

My background (if you're interested):

I'll be moving to Mauritius in 6 months, and am curious to what I will find.  I'm a non-French speaking Australian (currently living in London), with quite a few years experience in IT.

From what I've seen of the Mauritian job market, there are not so many jobs that are down my precise line of work, and the ones that are close do not pay so well.

So, I am currently planning on either starting my own business in Mauritius (everybody needs good IT), or just do freelancing work for foreign companies via the internet.

hi dan,

i have been here for the last 5 month and this country is superb to live as far as the climates are. sunny beaches and hot weather all the year round.

career wise, job prospect are very high if you are in the IT field, because right now this country need a strong push up in IT

But its not a bad idea to start your own firm and to get those company to outsourced their IT to you.

But it also depends on what experiences you have.

People are very humble to you if you are a foreigner but do stay up on your toes.

Hope this gave you a brief idea.

Hi shamanking421,

Thanks for your reply.

I'm finding that reports on IT work in Mauritius are somewhat split.

On the one hand there are several expats around reporting good experiences (yourself included), with well paid jobs in decent companies.

On the other hand I've heard a few locals moaning about the IT push being all talk, and not so much action.

I haven't actually lived in Mauritius yet, so I haven't made up my own mind.  My core skills are away from the Mauritian mainstream (ruby on rails on linux), hence the plan to start something myself.

As long as I can get a half-decent internet connection, I think I'm assured of a reasonable income.  Fingers crossed.

Dear Dan,
I'm here in Mauritius 1 month ago and I'm searching for a job from the first day I came here.
I work as you in IT and Graphics filed, and the result was like this:
1- low salary.
2- bad internet connection.
3- very tight market.
4- lows here changing fast.
5- too expensive cars.
But it beautiful island and nice people, and I wish you luck.

Hi Waell,

I guess you're in exactly the situation I'm scared I'll be in once I get there.

A couple of questions for you:

1. Have you tried setting up your own business and freelancing to western countries.  I.e. looking on sites like elance.com I've seen quite a few jobs that can be done remotely - some of them pay reasonably well (but many very badly).

2. Just how bad is the internet connection?  I can live with 4Mb or 2Mb, or probably 1Mb - as long as it's stable enough to support skype and ssh sessions.

3. You mention expensive cars.  From what I've read, you can import cars and avoid the massive import duties in your first 6 months of living in Mauritius.  Personally, I think I'll invest in a bicycle...

Lots of luck in your job hunt.

Dear friend,
1- I'm searching for full time contract to have some experience in the mauritian market for the first year after that you can have good starting with some knowledge of the market.
and for sure if you going to start freelancing job you need 600,000 and it's from the government lows.....you can visit www.gov.mu for more information.
2- I have 2 mb speed on the contract but it's like 256 kb or maybe less and the connection unstable too.
3- about the car issue, I think bicycle will not helpful and you'll see that when you arrived to mauritius.

Best thing to do as a start, sell your expertise as a consultant to mauritians coy. Then, once you know the market, and get a proper network, you will be able to open a proper company, along withn a local partner. This helps a lot ;)

Thanks for the advice guys.

I'm looking forward to the challenge of living and working in Mauritius.  Clearly not everything is straight forward in Mauritius, but there's always a way to make things work.

A good and helpful chat guys for those looking to move and work in Mauritius,

I may have to go down the consultants route, though not outsourcing. I shouldn't need a local partner, as have Mauritian family.

Kind regards,

David.
